Sports Car Magazine (SCCA publication) from 1944-1970 has been digitized and is completely searchable through optical character recognition (OCR).

This was done under a licensing agreement with SCCA.

The website is www.sportscarscan.com if anyone is interested in this resource

Chad

That's great news Chad thanks for the heads up. Wish they had taken it to 1980, i'm sure they will eventually.

Hi Buck,

It is their intention to do so from what I have heard.

Regards,

Chad

Oh, my. That could free up 12 ft of shelf space here, yet I really can't bear to bin my 1944-2006 collection! While access for many researchers will be mightily improved (SCCA's archives have never been exactly accessible), in a way this seems like having a digital photo of the Mona Lisa and throwing away the original. Nevertheless, I just bit the $375 bullet and ordered it. Thanks, Chad, for making the effort on this project and for talking with me on the phone.

yes this is amazing but rather badly timed for me. I just recently managed to pursuade frank barratt to very kindly photocopy his copies so I could fill in the my missing copies from the 1940's and after 30 years was able to say we had a copy of every issue up to 1962.
I to have sent away my money and it will be very interesting as to what there like particularly the search function and hopefully it is better that the "Motorsport" search function.
I also had a chat to chad on the phone and he sounds like a real enthusiat

A question as to the content of the magazine, only sports car racing? And if open-wheelers, only SCCA sanctioned events?

Yes, Michael, Sports Car was the house organ of the SCCA and as such, had minimal, if any, coverage of anything outside SCCA.

Tom is correct that is has primarily SCCA events, rallying and gymkhana, though some of the articles and race reports have cross-over information on other races, drivers, venues and marques.

Terry:

My "thumb-drive" arrived and downloaded fine. I have played with it only a little so far, looking at the very early issues, but the search works fine. The files are PDF, one per issue, and you use Adobe Reader's Edit/Find function to search. I need to spend more time with the later issues. Will report back later, but so far it's all good, and Chad was very helpful.
