I ordered some of his gear a while back and was surprised to discover in subsequent emails that it was him at the keyboard doing all the hands-on work. My brother had raced a 500 Triumph in ther late 60s and Nixon was a huge hero of ours, so to establish a line of chat and bench racing with him by email was a real thrill.
Hard as nails and gruff to the end he may have been, but I feel this was merely a projected persona, and beneath beat the heart of a real staunch racer and fan. Only last year he'd attended the storm-hammered Beezumph 19 at Anglesey with Don Emde to the delight of many, and even this year at age 70 he was still full-on, broke a leg a few months back felling trees.
A genuine legend, gone too soon.
RIP #9.

"Which one of you sons-of-bitches is going to finish second today?" - may be apocryphal but I like to think it's a true quote

Another top guy gone.RIP Garry.
I agree ,
Last saw Gary at the half mile national at Saluda track in 2007, where he was selling his products.
Back in the early 1970's he was one of the top riders who came down to help the local group get the short track program at the old Virginas State fairground of the ground by competing in a few of the shows.
Which led to my intorduction to AMA flat track racing.
There is a website run by Eddie Boomhower that features many of the local racetracks (racerreunion.com) and in some of the pics you will see Gary Nixon racing on the old short track at Richmond. Ahh the memories .
Man life was so much simpler then .
