I believe I have read a reference somewhere in these pages by the nephew of Walter Baumer (which should have an umlaut) to his uncle taking the wheel in Lap Seven. Other sources say he was allowed to drive only from the final service stop in Castiglione to the finish line, and only then for fear that the rules might require both entered drivers to drive some portion of the race.

I am also finding references to the length of each Brescia-Cremona-Mantua lap to be shrinking! Several sources now have what I thought were 103-mile laps down to as little as 80 kilometers. I know the roads have changed somewhat, but Google Maps shows about 188 km (roughly 115 miles). Does anyone have accurate references?

Thanks for your time.

Those distance errors are not unusual. British journalists very often got their sums wrong when converting miles and kilometres! 103 miles is the figure usually quoted, but having examined several sources, I arrived at a lap distance of 164.12km = 101.979ml by back-calculating from published average speeds for both race and fastest lap. Plus or minus about 20 metres anyway. :)

Here's the discussion. There doesn't seem to be a definitive answer.
