Hello all,

You may remember me from the Save Donington episode?

Well, I've now got another challenge, which will really push your racing knowledge to the limits...

My little boy is a big car fan ("car" was his first word!), so I fished down some very old matchbox cars from the loft.

Attached you will see a picture for 3 of them (plus one more, for a laugh), I'd like you to tell me what car they most resemble, in your opinion - ignore the colour of the toy.

I look forward to reading what you put!

Cheers,

Lee

Well, the red job is obviously inspired by the lobster claw Brabham BT34 but the (smaller) yellow one reminds me a bit of the Connew PC1!

OK here's my suggestion:

Red car = Brabham BT34

Orange car = March 751

Yellow car with blue stripe = BRM P153

Big yellow car = March 83C

Eh? Possibly a P180, but that looks nothing like a P153!

If it is any help, the red one is a V8 and the yellow is a V12...?

I've another for you, once I've photographed it...

Just off to Google your suggestions - good work!

If you re-paint them in correct colours be sure to use lead-free paint.

If it is any help....

The yellow car with the blue stripe is a Matchbox Superfast 34D produced from 1972-75

The red car is the Superfast 24D

And the orange car is No36C and is described as a F5000 car

I'll get my coat...have a look on E-Bay for more information

D-Type, that is exactly what I'm thinking of doing.

Phil, how on earth did you find all that out!

I'm thinking of repainting them with the colour scheme of the F1 cars they most resemble.

I know, I know my boy is coming up to his 2nd birthday, but we must get their recognition skills honed at an early age, mustn't we!

The #16 Superfast 34 (No 'D' on the bottom of mine !) has shades of BRM 153 in the nose and Matra V12 with the wild exhausts in the engine compartment after that it's a genuine bista special IMHO :cat:

Glad that at least one other person agrees with me over the BRM P153 even if Vitesse2 thinks we're losing it! Looking more closely, the "BRM" has a Team Surtees-like arrow on its nose - perhaps it is the little known TS7B - the one with the Matra V12 in the back.

I've changed my mind about the orange car - now reckon it is a Chevron B28

The Yellow car is based on a Lotus Formula 1 car I think. This came out in the late 60's/early 70's in several colour schemes and was one of the first Superfast Wheels designs, not previously made with the thicker pins and plastic wheel/tyre assembly. (Superfast saved the Company from the Hot Wheels invaders after Mattel stole a march on Lesney with their faster running cars - they were also more to scale and Corgi with their Juniors, which were much better models in terms of models but never really got a hold on the market).
The red one is vaguely based on a Trojan F5000 and appeared about 72/73, but does have the lobster claw front. Did Modus do a F5000 car? It was called team Matchbox, so not specified by Formula.
The Orange Car was also some kind of F5000 but not sure which, maybe a Surtees. I reckon that was produced c75. It was called Formula 5000 and later came out in Red.
A good example of the contrary names was the Ford Group 6 model aka F3L, I have several colour variants of this and it is outstanding.

I think i have all the pictured models somewhere but Matchbox never really went for true scale, just what would fit in the box, hence the odd proportions and non specific models designated as Formula 5000 or whatever. I will have a look for more info tomorrow and bore you all with the history!

The Yellow car was model number 34 and was produced from 71 to 73 in Pink after which it was changed to yellow and sold in 74 and 75 before being discontinued. It was called 'Formula 1 Racing Car'.
The red car, model number 24 was called 'Team Matchbox' and first appeared in Yellow colours in 1973, although I have never seen one. The year after through to 1978 it was red.
The orange 'Formula 5000' was model number 36 and was sold in 76 and 77 before being produced amazingly in Red with Texaco and Marlboro decals from 78 to 80.

Mark 13. If the model is supposed to be a "lobster-claw" F5000 Trojan then it must be my (Nov '73 for '74 season) Trojan T102!! Have a loft full of old Corgi, Corgi Junior, Dinky, Hot-Wheels, Solido, Bang, Brumm, etc., etc., models apart from the 120-or so on the desk in front of me!!!

The Weetabix logo reminds me that they did a collection of plastic kits sometime in the mid-70's of contemporary F1 cars. There were either 4 or 6 in total as I had them all and remember having them displayed in a (very shoddy) diorama at an end of year display at school.

I can also vaguely recall some other cereal, possibly Ready Brek, doing a "Send away X amount of box tops" promotion for little plastic model F1 cars that must have been at the start of the '70's.

I have the red and the blue-yellow ones. Been an avid toy car collector for years.

Made a changeable track (some 20 meters long with grass, trees etc) for them also, something similar to this:

http://boardgamegeek...it?size=largeon

(mine was more beautiful and a lot longer because we used 10 Km/h steps instead of 20 mph)

We played with rules derived from Avalon Hill Speed Circuit

http://lucidphoenix.com/sc/

Ours (made by Yours truly) were more complicated, and took into account the shape of the car to assess performance.
It was a beautiful game and we had some great races; all that preliminary work is now proving useful for an upcoming F1 browser game I am designing.

The blue-yellow one is a Serenissima to me.
