BBC sport are this morning reporting that Bruce Anstie yesterday equalled Agostini's Ulster Grand Prix record of being the most successfull overseas rider ever to compete at the event with 7 wins. Even to mention those 2 riders in the same sentence is an affront to those who know just how good Agostini was. To compare a genious of a rider like Agostini who completely dominated world motor cycle racing during the late 60s early 70s era with an elderly New Zealander with average ability just typifies the delusion that modern day 'road racers' are somehow just as good as those megastars of the past. Enough said!

Hi, Of course you can never take away what Ago achieved but it is a fact that like some of Mike the Bike and to some extent Surtees GP wins the opposition was not in the same league machinery wise. I know a little about the current "proper" road race scene and the difference in machinery is not so extreme today. For the reasons often mentioned on this site about glorified proddy racing...........

Rubbish. All it's saying is that ANSTEY has been there often and has acquired seven wins. It's merely a statistic. Should riders of the modern era stop attending events as they approach historic milestones ? If so, why didn't Hailwood pull out of the 1967 TT so as to avoid exceeding Stanley Woods' record of ten wins ?
You can't compare eras, and stats are just numbers, not guidelines of how relative successes are achieved. There's some pretty narrow focus on this forum, but that's pulling the line a bit too tight.

I'm sure Bruce wouldnt have had a clue about the statistic unless it was pointed out to him, it has obviously been unearthed by a journalist or brought to the attention of the BBC by the organisers.

A more unassuming and laid back bloke you could not find in any paddock, and certainly not one to go looking for any sort of publicity or to desire any acclaim over this, he just gets his head down and does his thing.

correct, the riders are not to blame these days. its the overhyped bullsh*t that goes along with them these days that gets on my nerves

once again the media show peddales it into a frenzy. it can be a good thing or a bad thing and generally i think its a bad thing.
