I am researching what I believe is a B-15 b Chevron. Unfortunatly the tube that normally carries the chassis number has been modified. The car does have the original SCCA roll hoop stamping but that revealed little info. We found only the name of R. Oroogui and that the car was registered in 1978 as "Chevron FB" and that it was in Southern California. Any suggestions?? Anyone recognize the name??

What's the SCCA number? That should tell you the original Region which would be a clue to its identity.

Allan, the hoop number is 19 1686. 19 is the Southern California region, 1686 is the registration number. I have emailed with Allen from that SCCA region. He was able to come up with the list of numbers for registered cars but not the actual detailed sheet that would have specific car information. All he had was the list which said, 19 1686, R. Oroogui FB Chevron 7/22/78.

Can you provide some photos? Is the windscreen the stock windscreen that covers the front of the cowling, or has it been extended (perhaps with aluminum) back along the sides of the cockpit? How did you get the name of Oroogui?

As Allen pointed out, the number on the roll bar might provide some information. You might also try calling Cal Club to get the number of the SCCA archivist for the region.

As I said earlier, the name comes from the Region 19 archivest who I have communitcated with via email. There is no body work for the car. It is some distance from me, in the next few weeks I will take some pictures and post them.

The curious thing there Mike is that Cal Club didn't register it until 1978. Why wasn't it registered in 1969? Either it didn't race in SCCA club events from 1969 to 1978 - which seems a bit unlikely - or it needed to be re-registered for some reason. Maybe the original log book had been lost but if that was the case the old number would still be stamped on it. Or the old number was one of those oval brass plates and had come off. Or maybe the roll hoop had been replaced - either because the new owner fancied a stronger one or because the car had been rolled.

Not that many B15Bs were built and once they were a few years old, they tended not to move around the country much. The only California-based B15B that I can think of was the one Doug Brenner raced in 1970 which was probably the car raced by Doug Turner (Newport Beach, CA) in FC a few years later. That would be your best bet. There are pictures of this car on Doug B's web site: http://www.brennerfab.com/. I'm not sure that Doug T is still with us.

"Finish Line", the Cal Club newsletter from that period may help you but it's not easy to locate. "R. Oroogui" would be R. J. (Joe) Ordoqui

Where did you get the car, and how long ago?

I suggest that Mr Orrogui is Joseph Ordogui of 7870 Boeing Ave, Los Angeles CA90045, who I've got advertising a March 80A for sale in 1982.
If you find him, ask him about the March...

Thanks Allen............you may very well be right on the delays in registering. I have been doing the research "long distance" as the car is in SoCal. I am going to go "touch" it for the first time in a couple of weeks and will go over it inch by inch. Tim from Chevronracecars.com said to check around the the rear of the chassis as there may be a stamping of just the year made, that would help in indentification.

Chris, thanks for that lead, will follow up with that today.

Suspect that they are one and the same.
No sign of Ordoqui racing this tho. I've got most of the CSCC regionals for autumn 78 covered, and in 1979 he scores national points with a March [4 by 31 July]
That doesn't mean he didn't use it earlier in 78, where I currently have no CSCC material, or that he did not try and use it in early 79 [I have very few race results for California that year] but it does make it more likely that he used it once or twice, just after the registration, and then traded it on.
