Leo won the CAMS Gold Star (for being the Australian Driving Champion - then using the Tasman Formula) in 1969 (oops - 1970 - thanks). He had the Star around his neck long enough for a few photos then the thing disappeared. Leo's never seen it since - probably nicked by someone at the presentation in all the excitement.

Anyway, at this weekend's Muscle Car Masters, the President of CAMS, Andrew Papadopoulos, presented Leo with a framed and mounted replica. I was on hand with camera to record the moment for the Australian Racing Drivers Club, who were the promotor of the meeting.

I lowered my camera at one point and Phil Harrison, the ARDC's promotions bloke, said 'keep snapping until he cries.' Leo is quite sentimental. I replied, 'I think I'm about to cry,' and Phil said 'so am I.'

It was a lovely moment, and Leo's a lovely bloke, and I couldn't be happier for him.

Here he is being interviewed by John Smailes, who was working over the weekend both on the PA and on the video they'll be releasing of the meeting.

Yes, 1970 powered by the lovely little Waggott TC4V. Well not the whole year, round 1 was the last Gold Star outing of his Repco powered Lotus 39, running second which gave him the 6 points he was clear of Max Stewart at the end of the series.

Ah yes, it's all coming back now : I thought the Lotus 39 Repco was one of the horniest race cars I'd ever laid eyes on, but I reckon Wirra's pic is in the Lotus 59 he won the title with.
A good lad, and a great tale from Bruce. Well done all.
