Dewie, do you recall Sydney hotshot, Noel Manning, and his big Vinnie? Definitely the guy to beat in the late sixties, in NSW at least. I once cravenly declined an opportunity to passenger for him
(Courtesy of the wonderful velobanjogent blog)

Sadly, just found an obit for Noel: he died in 2000, aged 65. As you probably know, he was the founder of 'Revs'.

Sidecar racing seemed to lose a something when the passenger stopped hanging out in front of the chair wheel. They were much more acrobatic when they had to move diagonally across the bike, instead of side-to-side as they do now.

To make it even worse, the passenger in a rear exit sidecar has to move backward in the phase of braking and move forward during accelarating, so fight g-forces each time....

This one of Jock I understand he only rode it once at Mallory on the Sunday and wrote if off at Oulton on the Monday.

It was actually 3 times over the 1979 Transatlantic weekend. At Brands on Friday Jamie Neill was passenger and suffered a broken wrist or collarbone when it threw him out (my memory fading). The picture shows Dave (Dick) Powell who stood in and tragically died at Oulton. Handling was the problem with a serious bump-steering issue. Heresay at the time said Dave was trying to fasten his helmet when he was pitched out.

According to Alan Carter, Smith offered to supply a new Honda for AC to race in the Swann series in 85. Turned out the bike was dog and AC was fortunate to have it sorted by Honda Australia, because Mal Carter had left a great impression on Clyde Wolfenden when Mal had toured Aus with Ron Haslam.

Amazing to see Mac Hobson on a Suzuki RG outfit, only remember Ernst Trachsel on a RG propelled one, have always connected Mac Hobson with 'Ham Yam'. Thanks for the shot, Graham

The Vanneste brothers from Belgium also tried an RG 500 engine....but without much success. According to the period press, something to do with the floppy rotary discs , placed at 90° from the traveling direction of the outfit, deforming and "jamming" due to the centrifugeal force ( does that make sense in english ? ) Well, that's what they wrote anyway....

Mick Barton also had an RG500 Mk 8 motor in '84, I believe it was the engine from Peter Huber's bike. I think Graham posted a pic of it some time ago.

Best I can do at the moment, but yes your right Mick it was an RG500 engine in Mick Bartons 1984 outfit, sadly hidden here behind Alain Michel & Jean-Marc Fresc.

Thanks Graham, that's the outfit, 'the flying dustman' as he was known! :D

edit - just spotted it's Simon Birchall in the chair, didn't he also partner some well known 'names' throughout his career?

It's from a late sixties meeting at Catalina Park. The Katoomba circuit being one of Australia's less safe venues.

The chairperson is wearing a quite well made replica, but which if I'm not mistaken is not a Premier helmet, but one of those rather infamous Griffin Graviner's with the notorious "frangible bolt" ....
