A lof of cool to Miami Vice was contributed by its fancy cars. Now I read that Sonny's Testarossa (was Tubbs ever behind the wheel?) was picked to be white on personal intervention of Enzo Ferrari himself. Apparently, he figured that the black Daytona did not fit too well into the night scenes. A keen eye - he was over 80 then. Reading this, it striked me too that the Daytona was something missing vis-a-vis the Testarossa. Just thought Miami Vice fans would like to know.

The 'Daytona' was a replica. Ferrari wanted to replace it with a real one.

I suspect this topic is of limited interest to TNFers.

The Daytona as I recall was a corvette with a ferrari reproduction body. Obviously the sound was fake too.

I thought the Testarrossa was fake as well? or at least, one of the cars used in the action scenes was a fake.

 Buck, I think you're right.... I'll ask my brother, I believe the car was painted by the shop he worked in then.

The Daytona reps used McBurnie bodies.

The Testarossa was genuine; Ferrari was credited for providing it.

Tom McBurnie no longer makes the Daytona

Tom said that John Middelton had helped him with this car. He has told me he had 2 front hub failures while running the car.

Tom McBurnie is now in the business of making Replica cars and his site is a must see. The quality of his cars is unbelievable and he has won many shows. Tom calls his business Thunder Ranch and the link is below:

T54: Thanks for putting up the picture of the LeGrand Sports racer.

One of the Testarossa's was fake, used for stunt sequences - it was a DeTomaso Pantera chassis with a Testarossa lookalike body on it.

I`m sure I read that somewhere.. like most of the shows in the 80`s, and perhaps now as well, you had the "hero" car, the one that had the closeups up done and the interior shots, and then the stunt cars..

As an aside, a few weeks ago I saw an actual real life 80`s Testarossa in Kingston, Tasmania... from the view in my humble similiar vintage Porsche 928 it looked utterly other wordly... and unweildly, and completely impracticle, tastelessy flashy, and also, a bit insane.. loved it! The difference between the Porsche flagship of the time, and Ferrari one is night and day...

Still a very nice car you have there yourself Stuart! I've always liked the 928, a proper GT I think.

I had a friend who was seling one of his business contacts Testarossa at his garage - the sheer width of it was impressive (and the reason for making it almost unusable through most UK towns and villages), as well as the sound of the V12. The owner was selling it because he wasn't using it enough - coupled with the fact that he was quoted something like £1200 for an engine sensor (might have been crank sensor) IIRC! The poster on my wall when I was a young 'un of a Testarosa alongside posters of a Rothmans 956 and Gerhard Bergers Benetton BMW was as close as i'll get to one.

Now, to try and keep this thread TNF friendly, the road going Porsche 906 that Danny Sullivan drove in one of the Miami Vice episodes, was that a real one or a replica?

I heard that they used a replica Testarossa for the first few episodes; Ferrari were so horrified that they lent them a real one, on condition that the fake be destroyed on-screen.

There were two black Testarossa's supplied by Ferrari North America. One reason was the fact that the Dayona(s) were indeed Corvette replica's. For better contrast for night scenes they were painted white. Also a Pantera was used sporting a copy of the Testarossa body but from some angles incorrect in shape. In the beginning of the series a 308 and 328 have been used too.
Not really a TNF subject, only for Danny Sullivan to star in one episode filmed at the Miami GP.

In a real race with a fist fight at the end Crockett and Tubbs and their girly Ferrari would have their asses kicked by Starsky and Hutch in a real man's car, the 460 cube Ford Gran Torino and 3 speed, YEAH!!

Just thought Miami Vice fans would like to know.

Ahh ! Miami Mice glad that came along was one more deciding faktor in deciding to ditch the hassle with TV licences and ditch the black & white telly.

There's just one more thing if you want a credible cop in a credible car I'd go for Lt Colombo's 403 cabriolet every time as he said 'it's a rare car' :smoking:

Heh, I was going to mention Steed's Broadspeed Jaguar, but I think if he sticks to his Bentley instead things'll be fine.

Before someone else picks up on it, "wog" is a term of humorous endearment in Australia and not offensive at all and Lee is quoting the use of it from a 7.30pm family TV show.

I quite like this one:

Diana Rigg

OK, there's no Lotus Elan in there, but I'm willing to overlook it...

Do they have a big wide white stripe down the whole side of the car which then crosses the roof?

No? Huggy bear would not be impressed.

Great thing about the Torino was that you could brake to a halt, slip a crying baby inside, and let it be rocked to sleep...
