Hi all,

I have just bought Carousel's model of Johnny Rutherford's 1975 McLaren M16 from a seller on eBay. However, the steering is broken and this is something I'd like to rectify. Does anyone have any ideas about how this comes apart? I can't see any screws and I'm reluctant to try and force anything.

Both have a sseparate forum dedicated to die-casts. There is an over-lap of membershiiop between them, but they are rrivals, with maybe ICM having somewhat more serious members. They do amazing things with die-cast, so someone should be able to help you. You will have to register on both sites.

It looks as if it's a fairly standard diecast with the base plate going into a slot in the nose and fixed by what look like two "rivets" at the rear. They aren't really rivets - it's part of the upper casting swaged over but "rivet" is the easiest description.
If so, then you have to carefully drill the heads off the "rivets"and it should all come apart. WARNING: watch the sequence the bits come out in.
After making your repair to the steering, re-assemble by following the dismantling sequence in reverse. Then add a blob of epoxy where the you drilled off the heads of the "rivets". If you're really skilled you may be able to drill them and insert a small coarse threaded screw instead of gluing.
If you come across blobs of plastic where a protruding end has been melted to make a connection be careful. Some plastics cannot be re-melted.
