You asked for it, you got it! (though not a Toyota in sight ;) )
These were scanned a while back, new scans processing now....
Another image of the ex-Michael Parkes, ex-Robert (RIP) and David Donner Ferrari 512M. Hear it?:
Jim Hall leads an honorary pace lap in his Chaparral, his eyes wetter than the photographer's no doubt:
George Follmer's 'Goodbye' after announcing yet another retirement, so many happy for indecision:
Bobby Rahal in his wonderfully-decorative Porsche 917K, an inspiration for my art career as a kid:
E1pix, the Rahal shot is stunning -- mind if I pry and ask where you got it? Looks kinda like the inside of the Carousel to me.

Thank You! That image was taken in Wisconsin. Kidding, that's an old joke when I show my best wilderness images at a slide show and am barraged by people wanting to know "where" and then go copy my "secret" spots earned from days of brutal trekking in the West.E1pix, the Rahal shot is stunning -- mind if I pry and ask where you got it? Looks kinda like the inside of the Carousel to me.
It's at the apex of Canada Corner. Unlike wilderness, all you have to do is brave some vines to get there. Bring a machete.... not really.
I am living a family medical tragedy every day, so I hope yours is manageable. Best to You and Yours, we too were hoping to go to the Runoffs and hope you can fill in for us.
Best!

Horst Kwech presenting the Victory Laurels to the TransAm winner
Racinggeek: It was a great weekend and the TransAm cars were very well represented. I counted over 40 of them. There also were a lot of Formula Atlantic and Formula Fords at the event.

Oh man, F/Atl's too?! Sounds like one of the better fall vintage weekends the track has had for a while.

I know some threads exist that are close to this, but they are rarely bumped into sight here.
Too many great cars, Man!

Doug Lueck and Harvey Lasiter on the deck at Siebkens
This is a pretty good story. When we got into town on Thursday I went to Doug's house and asked him to come have a drink with us at Siebkens. Doug and his wife Pam ran Siebkens back in the day. It is now run by their daughters Laurie Stecker and Lisa Sadig. Doug said that sounded like a very good idea. As we were leaving, his wife Pam asked where we were going. I told her Siebkens for a drink. She said well, Doug isn't. So Doug stayed home.
On Sunday I got him to sneak out for a drink with the boys. That is when this photo was taken. Shortly after this photo his wife Pam came down and Doug headed home.

Jerry, there's little doubt that you achieved that. Must've been wonderful to spectate.

Hey RA or Jerry, how was the weekend in general? I wasn't able to make it from Titletown (family medical issue, which may keep me from the SCCA Runoffs as well) and was disappointed not to be there. Besides the Can-Am deal, the VSCDA usually brings some interesting pre-war through 1950s machines, including a slew of MGs. Also, anything come of the Historic Trans-Am 2.5 cars that were supposed to be the other special group?
I have long said that the worst day at the track is better than the best day at work! Yes, I know that is a fishing sentiment, but it applies to our game as well.Must've been wonderful to spectate.
Fine weekend. Car count was down, but that is true throughout racing in these economic times. Several old MG T types running, a couple Bugattis, and a pre war Lagonda. The usual bunch of over prepared and over restored Corvettes. Two-Five TA cars were plentiful, numerous Alfa GTAs and Datsun 510s. Even Carl Swanson's Triumph Vitesse and a couple Vee-Dubs. A few Atlantics, Ed Wach's Toleman-Hart F-2, Jeff Miller and Ron Pace in the Kohler six cylinder Lolas from circa 1980, thankfully none of the usual IMSA GTP and later cars which stretch "vintage" to the breaking point. Historic Can Am was as mentioned and pictured above, but the car count was very low. Six ran in the race and another three were DNS. Quite different from the 1996 30th Anniversary Can Am event at RA which drew over 80 cars! Now THAT was something!

That was my first trip to Road America. Enough eye candy that it took weeks to decompress. I'll have to see if I can dig up my photos and hit the scanner as well.

Your sentiment is so very true, unless of course one is paid to work at the track (the best of both worlds!). And as any RA regular will attest, brats are tastier than fish any day!I have long said that the worst day at the track is better than the best day at work! Yes, I know that is a fishing sentiment, but it applies to our game as well.

Tom
I sure wish I'd been to that '96 race, but am planning on 2016 for the 50th! Correct me if I'm wrong, Tom, but in the 35th Reunion of 2001, weren't there well over 50 cars in practice? And perhaps 40 that made the race? Not sure of the actual numbers, but on Thursday practice it seemed an endless stream of Big Iron and it was really something for me to witness (my first of only 2 vintage attendances there). I do recall that many cars only ran in practice, some DNSed for mechanicals I am sure. But I got the impression several just wanted to wring them out but not race them — understandable if true, and beats a museum any day.
I have one of "Chadwick's" 1994 pano print of 19 Can-Am cars on the Front Straight hanging in our bedroom, along with Michael Turner's 1967 "Autumn Thunder" litho.... so think of Can-Am every day.
Thanks Again Jerry for the great thread.

Oh My, you sure timed that right! My first trip was 33 years earlier, likely in diapers, and yes I know how lucky I was. That was my first trip to Road America. Enough eye candy that it took weeks to decompress. I'll have to see if I can dig up my photos and hit the scanner as well.
I'd be happy to offer tips on the scans if you'd like. You may not with such new film.... but as many of us long-timers know, the older film can be torturous.
It'd be great to see what you have! Some say "Too much of a good thing is bad," I say "They've never seen Can-Am then!"

My wife and I were standing near Turn 5 for the ten lap feature Can-Am race. The roar of the cars as they headed toward us through the woods is something I'll never forget!

Absolutely -- I've used a version of that line in my blog on numerous occasions.
Wish I could've seen the Lagonda -- anyone get a photo? And we obviously sure do love our Mustangs in the Upper Midwest; the vintage shows at RA always seem to draw a mess of them. Thanks, guys.

I do not think I have ever seen such a row of blandly painted European sport cars. I could force myself to drive the E-type though.

That is Robert Ryan behind them looking at the McLaren Mk 6 of Lilo Zicron. Working on the Lola T-163 of Ed Swart is Jeff Bookman. Leonard and his wife Bonnie Janke came to this event from their home in Pender, Nebraska. Leonard was in the original CanAm series.
Very nice to see Leonard... I wondered if he was planning to attend... I am sorry I missed this event...

Jim Gustafson and his Swift DB-4 Formula Atlantic car
His car was crewed by his long time crew of Steve Allen and Joe Schonasky. Jim's team won the Group 4-5-7 race on Sunday at Elkhart Lake with this car.
Jim Gustafson in his race suit
Jim crewed on the Herb Caplan owned McLaren Mk 8 in the CanAm in 1972, Max Kelly was the crew chief of that effort and Mike Hiss was the driver.
Jim started his racing in 1970 with a Formula Ford Lotus 51B and then progressing into F-5000 and Center seater CanAm events. He has been racing for 40 years.

My wonder as well.... Caplan's US Racing ran an M8F in 1973 and the M20 in '74 for Scooter, and continued in Can-Am II with Follmer and then Rahal (or vice-versa).Would that have been 1973 when Scooter Patrick was driving?

I am sure Jim Gustafson helped the Caplan effort in 1972 and not 1971. I should have thought before I put that up. In 1971 Denis Hulme and Peter Revson drove the McLaren Mk 8's. I have corrected the post above.
I should know because Sid Taylor was running the BRM team for the westcoast races in 1971 and I was there with him. He ran Brian Redman at Monterey and Howden Ganley at Riverside in the BRM P 167.
Jim Gustafson helped Herb Caplan just on the westcoast races and their driver was Mike Hiss. This was in 1972. Mike qualified 7th at Monterey, he dropped out of that race. At Riverside he finished 7th in 1972 for Herb Caplan's team, this was the year before Scooter Patrick took over the driving duties.
As told by Jim Gustafson

But Yes, you're correct about the Herb Caplan-Mike Hiss entry in 1972 that Jim Gustafson crewed with.
Per Scooter Patrick, if memory serves he drove an Alfa T33 in selected 1972 Can-Ams, perhaps only in the West Coast events.
