Too bad it went on for only a few years.
However - I'm way too young for it, but the "Ford-Ferrari" and "Porsche-Ferrari" wars are stuff of legends. I simply can't decide between the two; let's just say that I'm sort of sportscars fan, no matter if we speak of WSC, FIA GT1 or LMS. Personally, I'd choose Peugeot 908 or Audi R18 over F1 almost anytime, including last week, when I almost forgot that there was a race in Monza; Silverstone 1000k were simply AMAZING!!

Group C - end of conversation. Those cars had to be seen to be believed
Maybe you never saw Can Am at it's peak.

Is that a joke ? That looks like another pathetic attempt to bring the boring modern motorsport back to its former self.
To answer to the poll, I cant really name one series, IMSA and WSC both had some fantastics years but also dull periods. The Canam was an incredible concept with virtually no limits, the cars were amazing, but it couldnt last long.
I'd rather mention 2 eras, the late 60's-early 70's, and the Group C era, both had lots of manufacturers and strong privateers, very competitive fields, innovative and different car concepts and most of all, gorgeous cars.

Can Am 1966/1973 was pretty sensational. Innovative and challenging. Can Am post 1973 was hardly more than a footnote.
The WSCC had some great years like the mid-fifties, 1965-1967 and 1970-1971 when it was bigger or almost bigger than F1, and there was another great era in the late 80s/early 90s - but some rather lean years in between as well.
I doubt anybody here in Europe paid any attention to IMSA in the seventies and suddenly it became very attractive in the eighties - to fizzle out again in the nineties.
So for me, the top is WSCC in the mid sixties/early seventies and late eighties/early nineties - and Can Am in its golden era.
But IMSA at its peak was better than the WSCC or CanAm in their lean years.
One thing is clear for me - today's sports car scene is rather bleak compared to the years when the F1 drivers were top sports car drivers as well.

I think that CanAm and Group C were both victims of their own success. In the end both were completely dominated by a single manufacturer and that always spells doom for a series....
