Wil Hartog Silverstone 1978.

WilHartog1978SilverstoneAdjusted2012wm.j

Photo Copyrighted to Graham Etheridge.

That's a great pic of Hartog, those years of 78 / 79 when Wil raced a lot in England were perhaps my favourite, he did ok for a guy weighing 3 or 4 stone more than Roberts, Sheene etc etc, apparently he still uses his 79 season leathers when doing classic meetings which is pretty good going isn't it.

There's a bell ringing that at a Cadwell (I think) meeting Wil was interviewed after a race and he donated his winnings to the recently bereaved Mrs John Williams

Indeed he did , but , like you not sure if it was at Cadwell , but when he raced in the UK on the ' Works ' Suzukis he had the general measure of Sheene

Could have been Brands I guess, too late in the day to dig through my programmes

He did have to larrop the brakes on at Cadwell on the start/finish straight due to an ambulance on the track

It was definitely Brands, after he'd won the double points superbike race, he was on fire in those late season road circuit GPs and carried that form into the british meetings where he managed a few wins at new circuits including Olivers Mount which I thought was especially good.

You'll have to get it on here for us all to admire, we were going to the mount that day but our mini bus broke down on a moor somewhere yon side of Guisborough, that was bad enough but because of the horrible weather we were stuck inside until some of our friends saw us on the way back and towed us home.
I'd been looking forwards to seeing Hartog at the Mount for weeks and that was a massive disappointment.

Hi, Just been the viewing all these fantastic photos by Graham Etheridge, I found these forums by accident

when looking for photos of Crystal Palace between 68-71. Am I correct in assuming that Graham is picblanc?

If so, Graham, were you around the Palace during this period?

I made an entry under “The Crystal Palace” forum hoping to find anybody who could remember the photographer at these events.

Jim.

Hi Jim, no sorry not me, thanks for your comments on my photos, I never got to Crystal palace when it was a track. I was just a wide eyed spectator not "official" photographer back in the 70-90's, hope you find something, I have a book about racing at the Palace I will look & see if any names of photographers are in it?

What other sought of subjects do you take (curious).

I'm sure you been thanked many times but thanks again for enabling

me and others to enjoy your work.

I used to do music gigs mostly clubs & pubs but occasional bigger venues when I get a pass & still do a few now.

Yep, I knew that's what you meant!

Hello Graham,

Did you manage to have a look at your Crystal Palace book for photographers?

I'm not sure whether it was clear in the Crystal Palace topic but thank you for putting the photo up.

Regards

Jim.

On the subject of photographers.

I the early sixties I can remember a photographer with a Leica that had carried big cassettes of 35mm film with a 100 or so exposures.

I met him when marshalling at Druids. He made it his business to photograph just about every rider at the meeting. I think his name was Thorpe.( I could be very wrong )

Does anybody remember him?

Graham, can I pick your brains regarding the B/W photo, what sought of camera equipment and settings

would the photographer used to get the shot in 1971?

Yes it was Len Thorpe who used to take photos at the various circuits in the 60s. I still have a few, mostly at Snetterton as that was where I used to get most entries accepted. I think he used to go to the National meetings as I don't remember him at Bemsee races, and these were the majority of races I did at Brands. I also do not have anything from Mallory but that may be because I think most (all?) of those races were Clubman's events. I raced in the UK from 63 to 67 before emigrating to Canada.

His address on the back of the photos from the time was 94 Bow Lane, Finchley, London, N12

I wonder if his archive still exists.

Stan

As you probably seen I’ve been looking for the name of a photographer around 60’s &70’s.

“Drumwrecker” mentioned the name “Thorpe” so I started searching, found a few names which I've emailed, some haven’t replied for one reason or other.

Then “StanN” said the name was “Len Thorpe”, of again searching found that Len use to attend cycle and motor events in the 50’s I was getting a bit worried that he might be too old for my meeting in 1971 at Crystal Palace. The shots I’ve seen of the cycle & motor seem similar to my photo.

Unfortunately the Len I found died on the 20th July 2009 aged 74.

I have yet to confirm if he was an active photographer at the 70’s motorcycle events. If this is the person what has happened to the archive of historical photo’s he must have produced. Is there a family member  who has them in their loft? Len was a member of a photography club for 50 years; I’ve just emailed the secretary of the club, as yet, no response.

In the process of searching I found an interesting connection between Max Poultney and Steve McQueen

at the following site http://transgarp.dyn...950_HillClimbs/, this also has an interesting fact because the  Sidcup MCC use to run its events where Brands Hatch is located. I didn't know, perhaps a lot of members do!

Please note: - The above link may give the impression the email was to me, actually it was to

                        Jamie Clarke, Webmaster, Sidcup DMCC.

Hello Stan,

Just read your message again, must have missed it the first time you said "I still have a few".

Would it be possible to see them?

The secretary of the photographic club was very helpful saying that some members remembered

he had an interest in motorcycles. Unfortunately, no one can say that Len was the author of the photograph; most of the oldies have gone to the photographic heaven. The secretary did say "when their season starts it may get talked about and maybe...maybe".

Jim.
