This pic really captures the essence of an era where a whole bunch of very fast and fearless privateers on reasonably competitive machinery made the 500 gps in general and the British GP in particular stick in the memory for ever. Thanks for this.

Ps. Is it my imagination or was the British GP weather better in those days as well? Remember getting absolutely roasted at the 1981 Siverstone GP. Absolutely fantastic times.

I well remember the infamous 1978 GP washout and the wet 1986 GP at Silverstone but they were nothing compared to the storm of Donington GP 2006.
Catalunya 2006 was decent though, i remember getting baked a bit there . :D

Chris Guy seems to have dropped off the radar, never heard anything about him for years, didn't Classic Racer advertise an interview with him but when the mag came out it wasn't there ? I remember when he launched a TZ750 over the barrier at Gerrards and he won a big international at Donington on an RG, a real hard rider.

Graham this back view shot is stunning. There is something about motor cycle racing back views that brilliantly demonstrate the rider's cornering style and control of the machine and at the same time provide a real sense of high speed and power. Thanks for this.

As for taking photo's, in Australia we are blessed that the Insurance nannies haven't made it this far down under and we have spectator fences at our permanent tracks that are not 10ft high and you have to sit high up in a grandstand with a massive zoom lense to take a decent photo.
Its just a coincidence that the fences are just the right to rest your forearm on while holding a can of beer.
These were taken with a basic SLR camera and even more basic zoom lense at Eastern Creek during the few years it held the Motorcycle GP races.

I think you were right the first time with Dary Beattie , Renn. That would make it 1995 then ( he didn't run at Eastern Creek in 96 , was still recovering from his Laguna Seca injuries ) . Although it could also be Barros in 93 ( the "traditional" helmet colours were starting to fade away...)

Doug Chandler did ride with Lucky Strike sponsoring in 1992 . That deal started in 1990, the Pepsi years were earlier than that, Schwantz was teamed up with Kenny Irons in 1987, then Rob Mac, then Ron Haslam.

Ahem.... disregarding what I just wrote above, #10 seems to be Ron Chandler indeed , in 1992. I didn't remember that yellow plates stopped being "compulsory" that early ( 1992 was actually the first year this much lamented - by me at least - tradition was lost )

....and to continue on that topic : Peter Goddard's wildcard ride was in 1993, so I was surprised that he is using yellow plates, while the regular team members Schwantz and Barros were with white number plates .....well, he must have preferd it that way :drunk:

Probably because he rode for Lucky Strike Suzuki that year in the All-Japan 500 championship, and I think they were still running yellow plates.

Ooooooops !

A ( bad ) excuse is that just before writing that post I was looking at a report of the Coupes Moto Légende at Dijon last WE, and Ron was figuring prominently on his immaculate BSA Rocket 3 ( at the ripe age of 81... )

“Lov om opphavsrett til åndsverk m.v. (åndsverkloven)”. Other wise known as “ÅVL”

I hope this explains it.

Referencing an old post, but felt it necessary to make a comment:

Mick: That captures it perfectly!! :rotfl: Mats (I am assuming this is your name), photography is Graham's profession and livelihood, and he is very, very talented. He deserves recognition and compensation for his images. I think it is incumbent on all of us to provide a name whenever possible if we know to whom a photo can be attributed and that information has not been provided.

Agreed 100% Claudia, thank you for your comment. Without our camera-carrying friends taking the time and trouble (not to mention the expense) to photograph and capture all of the exciting moments they choose to share with us, we would not have such quality and depth in a forum such as ours to give us so much pleasure whilst remembering the riders, teams and events from the past.

By the way, I had to learn Norwegian to reply to our erstwhile friends rather obtuse comments but well worth it in the end.

Or Google translate, as it's commonly known. :p ;)

I missed a shot of the big slide a few laps later, I was frozen to the spot, thinking bloody hell, I've got to get across the track to pick him up.

I guess after the initial outlay photography is much cheaper now.

One roll of film for me at each meeting 36 shots not many in perfect focus, so one or two worthwhile shots per film, unless Malcom Carlin gave me an extra film that was it! To get a close up I had to stand on the edge of the track.

Digital is down to what res you shoot at and how big your memory card is!

So Graham what kind of camera and lens(s) have you got, and do you use auto or manual focus?

They are all fantastic images, professional standard. You can even tell if they shaved in the morning!

Brilliant, keep them coming, I never tire of looking at them.

Thank you CP :D

I too (usualy) was restricted to either two rolls of 24? shots or a 36, mainly because of the price of processing them :well:

The old shots from 1974 were taken with my Practika LB SLR with a 200mm Optomax telephoto lens, all shots have been taken from public areas, though in those days you were much closer to the action & there was less fencing in the way too!

With that camera I set speed 250/500 panned round with bike till I got to pre focused part of track & pressed shutter. (Though sure you know that though others may not?;) )

In 2006 my Dad (no way could I have afforded it!) bought me an Canon EOS30D DSLR with an extra 300mm Zoom Sigma SG lens with camera bag & couple of cards it came to £1500+! Good old Dad!

I use autolock focus now with digital camera, and can shoot hundreds of shots which is the advantage over film.

The other thing is you can shoot in colour now but make B/W versions later on your PC, best of both worlds!

Do you scan the original photo or have you scanned the negative to post on here? 99% of mine are from the negative, as my photos were processed with the matt pimpley finish/ which is no good for scanning as you can see thousands of white dots when you do! :well:

Keep yours coming too!
