Wait for the conspiracy theories to come flying in.. Brawn has been playing the field and Mercedes have been sandbagging while waiting for super DRS to be approved.. Now its been fully approved they can turn up the wick and show everyone how much it is actually worth...

That's what Nico was missing from the past 2 qualifying sessions. He needed that. Good stuff Mercedes!

Let's enjoy this, because tomorrow might be different for us!

 It was awesome! Praying for tomorrow..

This is what we've all been waiting for. A Mercedes front row! I don't want to be disappointed on Sunday. I hope Mercedes has solved the problem.

yes!!! where are the people that used to say to abandon the development on the w03 and start then next year car? They dont get points for Q, but i still prefer to see them starting from P1 than P8 like last year.. Great effort from AMG

All of us want that and the W03 to be a good car but don't get too excited.. Tomorrow is gonna be much harder and we know that regardless of how the tyres work..

Just watched the analysis of the lap on Sky. It was his turn 6 to the end that were perfect. He attacked the final corner very well too - didn't unsettle the car by hitting much kerb and was on the throttle immediately.

im very excited only because on the start i get to see the Silver Arrows on the front row. Otherwise, its gonna be a miracle to be able to keep the positions during the course of the race, i will be pretty happy if they manage to finish in the top 5, guess thats a pretty realistic view of the situation.

Yeah, what is the point to take pole if you can't fight for the win? I hope for podium tomorrow.

Which is ridiculous if you consider they have locked the front row.

Yes, i don't wanna see one of the slowest front row lockouts ever tomorrow. I expect nothing more than what we have already seen so anything else will be a pleasant surprise, but there is definitely hope. The track can help them and you never know about the weather,so let's see how things pan out after making the best of it today. Good luck Mercedes, i hope this thread will be happy tomorrow too! :-)

First Mercedes Benz Pole Position since Fangio era came from the hands of Nico Rosberg.

Amazing lap, amazing job by Michael too.

Congrats to Rosberg, but I believe he sacrificed/gambled something to achieve this time (and he said he has made changes to the car before Q3). I would believe he is genuinely faster 0,5 sec than Schumacher, but not than everyone.

Sorry, can you explain what was so amazing in his performance today??? I guess not ~0,6s difference to team partner.

The gap to Michael in Q3 was huge, but it was exceptional for the weekend. In Q1 Michael was ahead, in Q2 Nico was <0.1s ahead and in FP3 Nico was about 1.2s ahead iirc - so yes he is clearly faster, but not by half a second!

Very happy for NR, Haug and all the folks at Brackley

Hopefully this, and other good performances, keeps Merc invested in the team for many more years.

I saw Michael at the very same level as hamilton, so I think is fair to say it was an amazing job by Michael. Its just my opinion.

i dont know if you guys noticed but Nico's top speed lower than Michael's in their Q3 run.
I think he had a bit more wing in his car
and also look at this
Posted Image
The track was dropping temp pretty quickly
and Nico made use of it as he was one of the first to come out
and also his out lap was 3 sec faster than others, which might have brought his tyre to temp quickly

Others just got caught out with the temp
Nico made use of it and thats why he was that much quicker than others

I think Ross Brawn purposely compromised the Mercedez double DRS in the first two races to only give them a couple of tenths in qualifying. He did this so that the FIA would assume the DRS wasn't a big advantage and deem it legal. Now that it it is FIA approved the performance has been increased giving them a huge advantage over the other teams! :D Congrats to Nico, awesome lap.

Haha I did wonder something along the lines of that. He is definitely happier to talk about the Double DRS now, instead of playing it down after qualifying when asked if it was the DRS that got them pole he said something like 'couldn't have hurt' (I can't remember the exact quote) but a much different response before the protest had been lodged and thrown out.

Good job by the team today. Fantasitc lap by Nico. How this team can do this in qualy, but not have race pace is still beyond me though. That is why i have no high expectations tomrrow. I get that impression from the team themselfs also.

"The team boss hinted that both Mercedes could have gone faster still.
"We backed off once we saw that we weren't really under any threat because Lewis has got a penalty," Brawn said. "We wanted to try and save a set of tyres."

Did Michael make a mistake in his Q3 1st attempt? .5 seems like a lot compared to most of the weekend. If he made a mistake and then the track cooled, preventing a second crack at it, the situation would make a little more sense.

Wonder how Rosberg will deal with the pressure. Seems crazy to think this is his first time starting from pole.

Mercedes entire season pivots on finding a set up to keep the tyres at the optimum temperature, doesn't it?

Rosberg had the highest speed in every sector and his biggest gain was in sector 3 where he was more than 2 tenth faster than Lewis (and 3 tenth than Michael). Probably he went more toward dry setup while other toward wet since there is 50/50 probability of the rain in race.

Like Lewis in the last two races, Nico drove an exceptional lap in first his try which was miles ahead of everyone else. Michael did a decent job, Nico did an exceptional one this time. Simple as that.

I used to think things like this but drivers and teams have been saying there is no wet/dry set up now days... they're virtually the same. So that probably isn't the case.

But they did say last weekend that their set-up was aimed at higher running temperatures - so in a sense, if it rains and running temperatures are lower, it is in a sense a rain set-up. Then again, Rosberg also said with lower temperatures tomorrow, MGP would do better.

Beautiful!

Not hoping for much from the race, unfortunately, could be another lottery or a case of going backwards from where they qualified. They've done their best in qualifying so a big thumbs up, no better way to start a GP.

Yes, of course they were sandbagging. Because the longest straight in F1 has nothing to do with that.

In Russian forum I read that Nico changed his settings before the Q1, he and his engineers decided to take the risk and put different settings than MS car, and according to him this give him that 0,5sec. This is quote of Nico.

Translated with Google:
"What allowed me to win the pole position? This is a properly chosen configuration. Before the departure of the boxes engineers decided to take a risk and install it on my race car a little different setting than those that have been installed at Schumacher. This gave me an advantage over second place in half a second."

He thinks that if it is cold tomorrow they can finish on podium. He think that he will not lead for long.

What I think Nico went for setup that heat the tyre more, if is cold will be OK. MS went for setup that doesn't heat the tyre as much. So, if it is less than 18-20 C tomorrow Nico will have advantage , if it is hotter (20-25) MS will have advantage. But, it looks like weather will be cold tomorrow 11-19 C. So, I don't know why team chose this for MS, or what Nico decided was only from his part of the garage.
