Jean-Eric Vergne has hailed this year's Formula Renault 3.5 line-up as the strongest outside of Formula 1.

The Toro Rosso driver, who graduated to Formula 1 after racing in the Renault-backed series last year, believes that the championship has stepped up a level for 2012 with a new car and an influx of drivers from all over the junior racing ladder.

"This is the strongest championship this year, stronger than GP2," said Vergne, who attended the FR 3.5 season opener where he performed demonstration runs in the 2010 world championship winning Red Bull RB6.

"It is a really really strong field, and the guy who wins this championship will definitely deserve a place in F1. There are so many good drivers, I don't think you will see anyone win more than three or four races."

The Frenchman, who finished second in the series last year to Robert Wickens, added that he wished the new car had been introduced while he was still racing in the category.

"I must say I'm a bit disappointed we didn't have the new car last year, it looks really nice," he said. "I was talking to some of the guys who have driven in other top categories and they tell me the grip is unbelievable.

"When you drive in a championship like this, it is to one day be able to drive in Formula 1. The car is much quicker than last year so it is getting ever closer to F1.

"This is a really good championship to prepare you. After racing in Renault 3.5 last year I felt at the end of the season that I was ready for F1."

Doesn't seem to be any coverage of WSR at Monaco. Massive shame.

in Estonia we get it live (or at least our TV guide still promises so) -> there is international live coverage -> if there is live coverage, there probably is a stream

Tennis seems to be more important. There is an Estonian channel covering it live, but i don't think there'll be any streams for it. :/

Great win for Sam Bird and a top drive from Bianchi too, 36s clear of the rest! Talk about a cut above the rest of the field.

so we can have two ex gp2 drivers going to a new formula and dominating it. Interesting. Let's wait and see.

It has to be said that Frijns was going pretty well before his retirement for somebody who - unlike Bianchi or Bird- never raced in Monaco before.

Next stop Spa, which he knows a lot better.

A pretty cold weekend is expected (around 14C) under dark clouds and with a chance of rain.

Well that sounded like a chaotic race.
Sorensen and Bianchi
Have no idea what happened with Bird and Magnussen. And Frijns just seemed to get pushed back every lap after the safety car.

Bird hit the ground running with this car! He just needs to stay consistent and his speed will only grow over this rookie season.

it seems that anyone who is called Lewis will get a penalty. :D why were they penalised?
though you could say 'justice was done', Magnussen was stand out driver in this race, nobody else than him deserved this victory.

I think it was because they didnt make their mandatory pit stop. Bird and Magnussen drove very well. Anyone know what happened to Bianchi, he just randomly had a problem at the restart and then was by far the fastest guy on track at the end?

Yup, they didn't stop at all.

Races looked entertaining in the live timing, but probably not as entertaining as ...Tennis or something i guess. Meh.

Does anyone know what the red flag was for? Formula Renault 2.0 had a pretty scary accident, but i don't know what happened in 3.5.

Stanaway was flying at the end of the kemmel, something like Webber@valencia but with no somersault.

and thanks for the reply! I didn't know they had to pit mandatory, then it seems the red flag was more of a misfortune for them. and at first I though how lucky they are... :drunk:

He is, but avoiding crashing into the car in front would help.

Arden just doesn't seem to be able to put together a competitive car in this series. Rossi and Williamson should be running upfront, but aren't, at no real fault of their own.

Oh, right, the crash is even on Youtube now. Thanks.

Wonder what's wrong with Rossi. In the Fortec, he was always near the front, now in the Arden-Caterham, he's in the midfield most of the time and not even setting competitive times. The team is new to the series and Williamson is struggling as well, but i'm still a bit disappointed.

'Bad news for Richie Stanaway. After a heavy crash in Spa he was hospitalized with severe back injuries. Lets's hope it is not to bad... Keep it up man!' - Van Amersfoort Racing's Facebook page.

Bad news for Richie, fractured vertebrae and needs an op in Paris.

He's always shown a good turn of speed and this was his first chance in a "recognised" series and this happens. Feeling for the lad.

As for Jules Bianchi, he's talented and quick and i'm aware this weekend wasn't entirely of his doing but the man always seems to find a way to not put a whole campaign together! Doing everything he can to throw his once certain chances of an F1 seat away the last couple of seasons.

was present at Spa today. Saw the the first laps of the World Series race at the Raidillon, then the rest of the race at the long straight. Couldn't clearly see the Stanaway crash, saw if from far distance but couldn't see what really happened because of the rain spray. The ambulance was at his car for quite a while.

Was very much impressed by the mature drive of Kevin Magnussen today, Bird was impressive too, fighting back to 5th spot, Bianchi had lots of bad luck.

In the Formula Renault 2.0 series Daniil Kyvat completely dominated but Stoffel Vandoorne was fast all weekend, he also impressed me a lot, he's quick and now 2nd in the championship behind Kyvat.

Yes, Kevin Magnussen impressed all weekend. He was going great before the safety car on Saturday as well.
Kevin looks to be F1 material. He reminds me of Vettel when he joined the WSbR a few years ago.

Great for Ramos! How did I not see this piece of news?!
Cesar will have another chance now in his second year, being out due to lack of sponsorship. I wish all the best for him.
CR is now the 4th Brazilian in the series this season.

I´m happy about it ! Good for Ramos to get a second chance so I wish him all the best. Cesar has been home in Brazil since October 2011 so I don´t think he has tested the new car.

And get well soon to Stanaway !

Surprised or not, but the sponsor problems seems to remain for Cesar. :|

Snip from the press realease:

"The gaucho *Cesar Ramos has the support of the company Fras-le, one of his sponsors in 2011. "But we are still looking for sponsorship so that Cesar can do until the end of the season and we have little time for it," adds Gaston Fráguas manager of the driver."

*I don´t know what word gaucho means?

Gaucho's are American cowboys. At least in the Argentine, Spanish meaning of the word. Might have a different meaning in Portuguese.

Sounds like he might only have a short term deal. Still, any racing seat is better than none.

Williamsen just wasn't getting the results, and I think that is a good move. While the Arden Caterham team isn't providing a good car, they were still capable of scoring points, and Lewis wasn't.

Slightly strange move for me. De Costa not exactly having a great season in GP3 himself.

Whilst dropping Williamson so quickly seems harsh even for Marko, ultimately I don't think he was going to be F1 material - and if Red Bull didn't either then I can understand why they didn't want to continue spending money on him. And as HaydenFan said - Arden Caterham aren't great but they aren't THAT bad.

I suppose Felix da Costa hasn't got much to lose by moving series as he's unlikely to take the GP3 title this year. But the reason why he's so far behind the leaders already has largely been down to his own mistakes, so I'm not sure what's made Red Bull go for him in the first place. Mind you, I was surprised when they went for Williamson as well.

The Junior Team seems to have an odd approach at the moment - Daniel Abt has a Red Bull helmet in GP3 too but isn't an official member. On current form I'd say he was more worthy of the promotion, but then I suppose as he's doing better in GP3 then it would be counter-productive to move him.

Perhaps Red Bull needs a new F1 driover for the not very well driving Vergne and noticed that Williamson will not be that guy.

Results don't always reflect someone's form. Da Costa had lots of bad luck so far this year. He was on pole position for the 1st race of the season in Barcelona but (like Abt & Spavone) was penalised in race 1 for a jump start. He also managed a fastest race lap in Valencia which shows that he has pace. His best result is a 2nd spot in race 2 in Monaco but his overall points tally doesn't do justice to his talent or speed.
