I was thinking of switching out the Sky Sports swappable for Orange TV on my mobile plan so I could watch British Eurosport today. Glad I didn't bother. And after all the fanfare about them showing both races live.

Da Costa's form in the second half of this year has been frighteningly good but I suppose it's worth remembering that this run of results has come when the pressure has been off, championship-wise. Obviously he was never expected to challenge for the FR3.5 title after coming in mid-season, and he had got so far behind in GP3 that it almost seemed like a write-off too. Don't get me wrong, he's very good, but when everything starts from zero next year there is going to be a lot more expectation and he might not have it all his own way.

Speaking of pressure and expectation, looks like Jules has felt it a bit....shame for him, but I'm rooting for Frijns.

Ooh, my bad. I'm not really well versed into how this all works. Is it like GP2 now. So the next race is a reversed grid. At least, I think GP2 does that. I'm not quite sure actually

yup, they have 2 quals, and full points for both race. the only difference I can recall is that tomorrow's race has a pit stop as well.

He was unlucky in the first half of the season, more than anything else IMO. And I think you begin to see more clearly who the big boys (and girls :)) are when you see them play with the bigger toys.
I believe he beat Di Resta's time in the Force India a while back in Abu Dhabi, IIRC, while still in his teens. That's got to be a good indication.
I think Vainio is doing well too.

FĂ©lix da Costa.. once again  just waited for the final laps to attack.

Superb pass BTW (they're showing the race on Eurosport now)

What was Bianchi thinking? Crazy move, he's very experienced for this level and still making silly moves like that, F1 teams will be watching this too. Oh dear.

little math:
since he is here, the points scored are:
Bianchi 149
da Costa 141
Frijns 128
Bird 103
and assuming he was getting acclimatized, say "winter testing" in the first 2 weekends :p as it seems something clicked in silverstone and is doing great ever since, points starting with silvertone:
da Costa 133
Bianchi 100
Frijns 78
Bird 72
I know, I know, I'm bending the facts to my liking a bit with the second one, but it's still impressive...

Tomorrow, the final race for the World Series by Renault championship will decide the champion. Will it be rookie Dutchman Robin Frijns, or Force India test driver Frenchman Jules Bianchi, or will the British ex-GP2 driver Sam Bird take it still?

Here are the standings:
1. Robin Frijns - 189 points
2. Jules Bianchi - 185 points
3. Sam Bird - 173 points

Let's look at the championship scenario's by F1stats.

...he needs to win, with Frijns finishing no higher than 6th, and Bianchi finishing no higher than 4th.
...he needs to finish 2nd, with Frijns finishing no higher than 10th, and Bianchi finishing no higher than 8th.

For Robin Frijns to become champion...
...he needs to win.
...he needs to finish 2nd, with Jules Bianchi not winning.
...he needs to finish 3rd, with Jules Bianchi not winning.
...he needs to finish 4th, with Jules Bianchi not finishing higher than 3rd.
...he needs to finish 5th, with Jules Bianchi not finishing higher than 4th.
...he needs to finish 6th, with Jules Bianchi not finishing higher than 5th.
...he needs to finish 7th, with Jules Bianchi not finishing higher than 6th and Sam Bird not winning.
...he needs to finish 8th, with Jules Bianchi not finishing higher than 7th and Sam Bird not winning.
...he needs to finish 9th, with Jules Bianchi not finishing higher than 8th and Sam Bird not winning.
...he needs to finish 10th, with Jules Bianchi not finishing higher than 8th.
...he needs to finish outside the top 10, with Jules Bianchi not finishing higher than 9th and Sam Bird not finishing higher than 2nd.

For Jules Bianchi to become champion...
...he needs to win.
...he needs to finish 2nd, with Robin Frijns not finishing higher than 3rd.
...he needs to finish 3rd, with Robin Frijns not finishing higher than 4th.
...he needs to finish 4th, with Robin Frijns not finishing higher than 6th and Sam Bird not winning.
...he needs to finish 5th, with Robin Frijns not finishing higher than 7th and Sam Bird not winning.

Also, Da Costa just gets better and better! However as KateLM says he's not had too much pressure on him (although RB young driver academy expect decent results from the off, just ask Williamson!) and we've seen it before, firstly with Korjus and Frijns has disappointed lately, sometimes it clicks for a driver early on in FR3.5 but then things go away from them, next season i think we'll see what Felix is really made of.

My issue with Da Costa is that he hasn't really shown outside of the last couple races. Took him 20 races to win a race in GP3.

Frijns has disappointed lately

While I don't disagree, if Frijns wins the championship we shouldn't underestimate the mental fortitude required to win a championship battle against more experienced opponents, which is a good characteristic in a driver.

Yeah, a season isn't just made up of the back half and I don't think the pressure on those who lead from the off should be underestimated. Frijns has done brilliantly well over the year up against much more experienced rivals.

What happens to Bianchi if he doesn't claw it back, I wonder? This year seems like a last-chance saloon for him, like Bottas in 2011. Bottas, though, really delivered when it mattered.

Da Costa is undoubtedly the favourite for next year but as olliek88 said, we'll see what he's really made of next year when everything is reset to zero. I don't buy that bad luck cost him the title in GP3 either - His luck wasn't any worse than Evans over the season and he cost himself substantial points with mistakes at the start of the year.

Oh, and I keep forgetting too but his first name is Antonio. :p

Dropped by Ferrari Driver Academy, career essentially over? When he had a slow start to the season I didn't hold out much hope for his future in the Ferrari Driver Academy, but fair credit to him for turning it around. He's definitely skilled, but he's never quite shown the promise he showed in F3 Euro Series. Even this year he's not been stellar against far younger/less experienced opponents (Bird excluded).

I'm not sure what to think. Even after coming late, da Costa is doing better here than he ever did in his 3 years of GP3. Melker was 3rd in his first race, and Vainio already grabbing some points...

The guy is poised for great things, if he continues to have the kind of support he has now.
He already did great in GP3, even in his first full season, despite his teammate being the main focus of his team. Prior to that he only had two race weekends and he didn't embarrass himself either.
Sometimes numbers don't tell the whole story. This is a fun driver to watch because he's always on the charge and he's a great overtaker. He was a great in his karting years. I wasn't sure about his qualifying speed, but he's doing fine.

I have a feeling that De Costa is one of those drivers who, the more powerful the car, the better he drives - There are precedents for WDC, Denny Hulme & Damon Hill. I would take him over Bianchi in my F1 team.

I'm more impressed with Frijns to be hounest, because it's his first year in this league between the big boys. He wins everything he competes in as a rooky, and does this whitout any backing of a great drivers program. 2 year ago he won the Formule BMW, last year he won Formule Renault 2.0l Eurocup, and this year he has the best chance to win Formule Renault 3.5. Somehow the big teams missed this great talent, and I'm happy Sauber is giving him a try in the test. The sad thing is, he hasn't got any sponsors and will have to get a seat based on his driving. Which is more than good enough, but the way F1 is beeing run lately I'm not so sure about his chances.

Sorry to bombard this place with Da Costa pics but i've seen a few photos of him do this previously and looks like he did it again today after the race, who needs the Vettel finger when there's the Da Costa "cowboy"

I have to say that he's extremely tenacious, that's certainly one of his strengths.

He just looks more focused on his job than Bianchi, and that might make the difference.

Sorry, I didn't see your reply until just now.

Good luck to Robin Frijns tomorrow! Championship victory and a successful young drivers' test with Sauber could put him in the frame for an F1 seat next year...

Abt's doing his best to ruin the good reputation he gained in the last couple of weekends of GP3, I see.

So Da Costa is looking like having the most race wins out of anyone this year...if we are being finicky he's actually done 2/3rds of the season, not half, but it's bloody impressive however you spin it.

I felt that wasn't Abt's fault, legitimately on the outside but Korjus (i think) tried going over the kerbs and ran into Daniel.

yup, it was Maldonado-Hamilton-valencia with Abt as Hamilton.
Vainio up to 3rd by staying out longer, and challenging for 2rd, great showing as well!

I typed that a few minutes before I sent it and on second look I agree, not really his fault after all.

Vainio having a great race so far.

Rossi has made good progress too but overall his form in the latter half of this year has just been baffling, even when you take poor luck into account.
