Several sources claim Tony Maggs drove the Lola Mk6 GT on its debut to fifth place in the 1963 Silverstone Daily Express sports car race on May 11. Others say he finished ninth that day. It seems that he started from the back. Why? And where did he finish?

Thanks for any info you may have!

I think you mean 1963, not 1962. According to the results on the WSRP site, Maggs finished ninth:

Edit: I thiink the confusion has arisen as the car finished ninth overall but fifth in its class.

Yes Tim, of course 1963, my fault. WSPR says ninth I know, so does racingsportscars.com, yet Starkey's book on Lola says it finished fifth. Now that book is full of mistakes anyway, so maybe it (and several other websites) is wrong.

And did Surtees drive the car in practice as Starkey claims?

DSJ to the rescue once again!

From Motor Sport June 1963

~ Interest in this race was the 4.2 litre Ford V8 engined Lola GT Prototype coupé. Surtees was to have raced it but at the last minute tyhe Ferrari team manager refused him permission, so Maggs was hurriedly pressed into the car never having drivan it before and without practice he had to start from the back of the grid.

And not surprisingly Martin Krejki has the same placings as Jenks's report.

Thank you (and yes, Martin deserves a statue!)
