I'd love to see today's F1 cars towing a caravan....

They don't?

Because every time a caravan sets out on our crowded and twisty roads it ends up with a queue of frustrated motorists behind it. Don't you suffer the same thing in Germany?

Didn't see this cruel comment ( :well: ) before. As ever I have to stand up for the caravanning fraternity.  Cars towing caravans do not normally travel as fast as they would without the caravan, we are free to travel at any speed up to the speed limit...

When a queue develops behind a caravan it is invariably the wimp right behind who is holding things up; too scared to pass, despite being given opportunities to do so; too stupid to drop back and allow others space to pass.

Then there is the slow moving vehicle in front of the towing car that those behind don't see. All sorts of vehicles travel slowly and hold up traffic, why blame the caravanner?

A few years ago there was a suggestion that on the long hill on the M5 heading out of Bristol that caravans should be restricted to the inside lane. By way of protest I drove all the way up at a steady 60MPH (towing speed limit) passing much traffic on the way.

I don't know if it's the price of fuel or not, but there seemed to be a lot more dawdlers on the M90 on Friday as I headed north with the van.

Remember reading a letter in one of my father's Motorsports many (many!) years ago that was saying the same sort of thing. The writer had apparently taught his children the rhyme "It's number two that starts the queue, yah-boo to number two". Also remember with my late father towing a caravan four up in France on a deserted RN and travelling at an indicated 98mph! We did have a stabiliser torqued right up!! Still use one towing our race-car trailer at (possibly) higher speeds than the limit!

The ever-present delays during the spring and summer caused by "overturned caravan on the A30".

But I do agree, it's not always the fault of the caravan driver...often the first in the queue behind just doesn't have the confidence to overtake. However I've noted an increasing number of convoys of caravans (a caravan of caravans, if you will) where four or five of the bloody things are going to the same destination. It really is impossible to overtake them except on dual carriageways.
