I've just found something that half of us would recognize as a striking piece of craftmanship, and the other half would label as an historical abomination:

http://www.automobil...ood-highlights/

(that's the first car in the gallery, btw)

Someone in the comment wrote, correctly, that this car is a replica made by Neil Twyman based on the 250GTE s/n 2349GT, but nothing is said about the hardtop: it's obviously a whim of the car's creator, but I wonder where he took inspiration from and if there's some kind of story behind it...

Since the original comment I made here might have been misinterpreted as a personal attack on the builder of the vehicle in question this comment has been removed by the author.

No offence or questioning of the builders craft or quality of the vehicle was intended.

Ah, right. I was a bit worried that only Olympic-class gymnasts could get into the thing. Thanks, Ralph.

It was surprising what you could do in a Frogeye with the roof up even if you were 6ft31/2

Me too! Of course, I'm from the USA, where we regard custom cars as high art.

Some open Ferrari racers received a kind of soft top treatment. I believe also the 250 TR.

The designer closely looked at other italian designs like the TdF and the 450S Costin (yes, I know).

At the time the 250TR raced, the FIA requirement for a sports car to have an erectable hood was still on the rule book but was generally interpreted, shall we say, fairly loosely - even at Le Mans.

I can't make up my mind whether I like this one or not.

In this case, the "rebuild, replica, fake" issue doesn't bother me as there is no attempt to pretend it is what it is not.

You stole the very words from my mouth!

I admit that I like the hot-roddish flavour of the low line roof!

Nice job; I'd like to see it up close with my eye unfettered by artificial lens and photographic interpretation.

It's a cut-and-shut Cobra roof isn't it?

Inasmuch as a Cobra (leMans) roof is a cut and shut Auto Union roof...
