the thing we can't see is how the team built the car. wasn't the big issue how out dated the manufacturing of the tub was and how this hurt overall weight distribution?
hopefully the team have made gains there and will have a more tuneable car!
i doubt the will be in the top 5, but if they can sneak into the points on occasion that will help them immensely.

Look I don't know what Williams fans are worried about, this years car is Dr Jekyll compared to last years Mr Hyde. I would say with less running they are on the pace of Sauber and I fully expect them to be in the Lotus/ FI mix.

No mention of the few hours of non running here really.

Driver: Pastor Maldonado
Chassis / engine: FW34-01 / RS27-5326/1
Location: Jerez de la Frontera 4.428km
Objectives: Set-up work and long runs
Weather: Dry and sunny
Time: 1:21.197 (10th) On lap 40 of 97

Mark Gillan, Chief Operations Engineer: We successfully completed the majority of our planned test programme today with Pastor covering 97 laps. We performed a mixture of mechanical and aerodynamic set-up tests, in addition to continued engine and KERS systems checks. Bruno will have his first outing in the car tomorrow as we switch driver for the final two days of the test.

Pastor Maldonado: We ran through our test programme and covered everything we needed to today. We did some long runs this afternoon and the car is looking good. We will now spend some time analysing all of the data we have gathered. It’s good to put more mileage on the FW34 and we now aim to continue that throughout the next two days.

The Williams F1 Team will be back on track tomorrow, Thursday 9 February, with Bruno Senna driving the FW34 for the third day of the test.

"Pastor Maldonado was out late in the Williams FW34 – around 4:00pm – but at Turn Five, where I was watching at that point, he was sensationally fast. The Williams looked very good at this fast corner, which I think augers well for the season ahead. The car seemed less effective into the hairpin, and through the slow-speed chicane, although Pastor was on hard tyres and a very heavy fuel load at this point so it was difficult to judge. In terms of his driving, Pastor looked excellent, I thought - neat, precise and efficient."

sounds promising thus far....

Sounds good, although after testing last year things looked good...

Looking forward to seeing Senna in the caar tomorrow, hopefully with no technical problems

When was the last time an FW- was good through high speed corners?

Edit: Also I think the team wins the livery competition this year, there's a pick on the home page of Pastor behind Jenson. The FW34 looks quite frankly menacing in it's dark livery behind the silver Mac.

As an aside, McLaren also have a much larger swathe of silver this year on the side of the nose, with no sponsor.

2009. FW31 was really competitive at circuits like Sepang or Silverstone. The problem was draggy car and weak engine so this car was horrible on long straights and lap times on fast circuits not always were very good.

And if you look on 2010, again, one of the strongest performance was Silverstone, which is rather good indicator how the car performs on high speed corners.

It seemed an issue before 2009 that car was decent on slow corners, but bad on fast corners. From 2009 there wasn't big difference between fast and slow corners. Even last year drivers were complaining the most about the way which the car behaves in slow corners.

The only time I've seen the cars in the flesh in race conditions in the last few years was Belgium '09. You could see the car was not happy in the high speed corners, and had absolutely no top speed. Nico lead for a while but that was fuel strategy and he was hunted down even then.

With the Renault engine there is one unknown taken out of the equation when comparing to Red Bull and Lotus.

The last couple of years there have only been the new teams to compare with.

I have high hopes (again!) for this season, hope Senna can prove the doubters wrong. Pastor kept it clean the last 2 days, no offs, unlike what we used to see form The Hulk!!!!

Have to say I'm a little disappointed and concerned in the lack of non-driver related sponsors on the car. The 2011 performance combined with the overall economic climate must make it a very difficult sponsor market out there. Let's hope that Senna's sponsors are bringing several suitcases full of cash

its the association with Venezuela's marxist freedom of speech crushing dictator that is driving away all the other sponsors.

on that note i am still wondering what happened to the QNB deal.

That means the car has downforce, the most important thing.

This was the team first serious test with Renault, they must still be fiddling with engine braking and power delivery settings, hopefully that will help on the slow corners.

That may be true but I have yet to see a company actually state that (they wouldn't would they?)

Looking at the other midfield teams, most of Sauber's sponsors come from Perez (car is still very bare), nearly all of FI's are Mallya companies, Torro Rosso have????

It's just not easy to get sponsors at the moment.

Good lappage so far by Bruno, 62 laps so far.

And the times look pretty consistent. Williams have stated they will not be going for qualifying type runs this week

1- the car seems reliable.
2- lap times are consistent.

Now wait for the definitive aero package to see how fast it is.

Bruno was a busy boy today 125 laps!
Would be nice to see the Williams further up the time sheet, but im sure they havent been going for quali times.
1 tenth slower than Maldonado's fastest from yesterday, which is pretty good seeing as its first time in the car.
I really hope Williams can do well this season........

Good to see Williams (and Senna) managed 125 laps. As has been mentioned, they have even more things to tick off, with a new engine as well.

Long run pace -if we assume laps in the 24's and 25's are with a relatively heavy car- is looking quite OK.

Great stuff, more of the same tomorrow and then the team will really have some data to mull over until the next test.

I am interested to see what they can do aerodynamic wise (sidepods) now that they have some data on the cooling for the Renault. Seems like a good move changing engines at least

Doesn't sound promising so far, lots of talk about potential, atleast it's fairly balanced so there is room for improvement.

Did he say that? Did the headlines change? The headline says "can be" a better car (which is no biggie, I bet all cars can turn better), but the quotes don't show that either.

I'm sure FW-34 can be a better car, and this year it seems that they're moving in right direction (last year there were lots of problems with KERS and other stuff during testing), but the truth is that the competition ain't standing still.

I'm also sure that we're running a different programme compared to lotus, but early conclusion is that FW-34 looks slower than TR, Lotus, FI, and Sauber. The good thing is that Williams has consistensy and it's easy to drive, but I would much rather prefer that it was Pastor who made those top times on the beginning of the first day of testing.

Eyebrows are raised when the FW34 completes its first few laps. Bruno Senna is visibly struggling in the chicane and seems unable to apply much throttle without the rear misbehaving.

There's more here. Trackside with Jerome D'Ambrosio

"He said one positive of the car is its traction, which is an area Williams struggled with last year."

So much for track side observations of Mr.D'Ambrosio  ....... Obviously its difficult to say what each team is doing and this certainly will affect how the car appears on the track even to an expert eye.

Another addition to the team

http://www.autosport...rt.php/id/97461

Important this week is for Williams to get to know the Renault engine, most other teams have the same package as last year and so can work on other things.

It will be interesting to see how the car goes at Barcelona

This car could be a "Sauber" it actually keeps going faster and faster on longish runs instead of slowing down due to tyre degradation.
Good news about traction.

Several teams are already running new wings, floors, bodywork... you name it.
Williams is pretty much running the FW33 aero package, times aren't of the essence right now.
