Very happy with today so far, the car and Bruno have been really consistent on the long runs.

They are doing the race sim, I think. My question is if everybody except Senna is having nice lunch!

A 20.1 at the start of the third stint is a very respectable time as well given the number of laps afterwards.

I don't think the site I have been following counts in or out laps to the total so including those he would have been over race distance.

For a full race you need to do 72 laps (69 race laps, 1 to the grid, 1 formation lap, 1 in lap). His race sim started on his 31st lap. So he's a few laps short of a complete race.

He went out lap 29 passed through the pits and then started, kinda doing the formation lap.

I kinda expected 23 more... (on the third stint).

that's a ton of laps, wonder if they are also running that much to get the team working together as a whole. developing communication and how to coordinate things over a race distance.
still can't get caught up in the times. nobody will know for sure until about the third race what the true pecking order is going to be.

Is that a cooling slot open in the shoulder of the sidepod? We've not seen Williams run that before if so...

I think it's the two shadows crossing to make a darker patch.

Or if you mean at the top of the shoulder that's a little vertical fin.

vertical fin; you can see the reflection on the curved surface of the sidepod..

I was talking about two different possible sites on the shoulder of the sidepod. If you look next to the big fin there's a point where two shadows cross and it does look a little like an opening.

Bottom line no cooling holes in that area... so far.
Thus far Williams is exiting the hot air at the end of the sidepods, kinda like last years Ferrari, only a lot smaller.

Apparently they don't want to use the RBR central hole since they put so much emphasis on the low gearbox, but late last season they ended up "surrendering" to it, so maybe the car will see some changes in this aspect before Melbourne. First test with Renault too... they might have gone for an overkill bodywork.

Good news is, the car appears to be reliable, consistent and "developable" without major issues that can't be fixed.

I read that Bottas is getting a test day in barcelona, and when he's driving in FP's (15 times) he's always getting Senna's car.
the first is just plain dumb, they should leave the winter test for their race drivers... and the second suggests that they're grooming him for a race drive instead of Senna.

Honestly, there is no reason for him to test right now when he is getting 15 session's during the season.

Regarding which car he takes, well... contracts.

There's plenty of reason to give your third driver as much time in the car as possible.

Just for one see Luca Badoer.

There's no reason to groom him for Senna's seat so long as the team is dependent upon Senna's sponsorship package. To improve their financial position, they need results. To get results, they need to extract the maximum from their drivers, and to do that, they shouldn't be giving away practice time to a third driver. By latching onto Bottas, Williams are committing themselves to a Catch-22 situation, and its maddening.

Well, it's hard to know the situation behind the closed doors at Williams, but I suppose that Wolff was pushing for Bottas to get the race seat this year, while the team was reluctant and opted for Senna intstead (after the failed attempt tp get Kimi). They needed to throw Bottas a bone, so they gave him the car for 15 practices (too much IMHO, they should've offered him max 10 FP's). They cannot put him in Pastors car (and for 35million they get from PDVSA they should carry Pastor to car and back on FP's, and give him 10 personal assistants) and Senna was prepared to accept all conditions just to get the race seat, so there you have it. Not an ideal situation, but it's a decent one because it offers lots of options for 2013 - if both Pastor and Senna shine this season, they can easily give Bottas the boot, and if some of the drivers isn't good, they put Bottass in his place for 2013.

As for sponsors, they already look better than last year, so I hope it will produce some results and threfore sponsor interest. If Senna somehow gets to the podium it will be a sponsor explosion!

Exactly, they probably couldn't give Bottas Pastors seat for the practice sessions so needed a driver who would accept this situation.

I think Pastor will be seen as the senior driver in the team this year, having 1 season with them already. It will be interesting to see what happens if Bruno gets the better of him. Tough choice to make for next year then.

In any case pastor will be kept, and Senna will be sidelined unless Senna brings in 50 million GB for 2013. New turbo, new Kers,... it is going to cost team dear.

Beyond belief isnt it! £29.4m for a season..... bloody hell!
I can see a bright future in F1 for Pastor, as long as the money keeps rolling in (Petrov anyone?) :rotfl:

Anyway back to Williams FW34, what do you guys think so far?
The car looks nice and seems reliable but you cant help but notice its been near the bottom of the time sheets so far, i know its early days but still....
Peter Windsor seemed to think the car looked fast when he saw it out on track, Bruno has been quite positive about it, but seemed to want to make it a bit edgier.
Did they do any short runs on low fuel and soft tires or was it all with decent fuel loads and medium and hard compounds?

Yes. With the kindest will in the world, I dont think anyone is interested enough to steal Williams stationery and forge an invoice...

With the amount of 'interest' in the deal in Venezuela, its entirely believable with the agreement being made public, that the invoice would be public as well.

Well this is the front wing from of the FW33 from Brazil. The pylons to the nose look different so not really sure.

Also interesting is that Oris sponsorship is there.

This begs the question of where the bump is on the FW34 on the nose cone or on the main monocoque. If it is on the nose then it should be possible to change it?

I saw those youtube videos of Jerez, and the car looked very good on fast corners (good change of direction, carrying a lot of speed in) and less so on slow ones, kinda like what Windsor said.

But without knowing how much fuel the cars had on, and how used those tyres were we can't take that for a fact.

All the bumps are on the nosecones of all the cars not the monocoque. They specifically made it like this because some of the teams wanted to recycle last years monocoque. IIRC if you wanted to redesign the bump or whatever, you'd have to go through crash test still as the nosecone is part of the crash test.

Ok, apparently that pic is from a filming day. Maybe they decided to unuglify the nose for sponsors?

Best thing about that pic is that Oris sponsorship is still there though smaller.
