If you go out in an area like that, you just have to keep the throttle down to get back on the road.

Yeah, f*ck the spectators.

Solberg off... could have been quite dangerous with the pole falling and the power cable

Wow, very lucky!

Yeah, f*ck the spectators.

That's what I said...

But no, as a driver. Your thought is to get back on the road, the way to do that is full throttle.

So 9 consecutive titles for Seb. We have seen the greatest rally driver of all time. Pity so few people appreciate it.

Dani Sordo will do 8 rounds and Loeb will do 5 rounds with a Citroen next season.

I have to agree. Even in the Motorsport press....9 WRC Titles in a row is a bigger story than another Vettel GP win. The general media won't take any notice if the specialist Motorsport press aren't giving him the credit he richly deserves.

Is this a rumor or do you have a news source?

Would be pretty awkward if somehow Sordo started outscoring Hirvonen. Shouldn't happen on gravel, but...

Mini Ends Works WRC Programme
12 October 2012

Posted Image

Mini is to withdraw its financial support for its works team - WRC Team Mini Portugal - at the end of this season.

The team's drivers Chris Atkinson and Paulo Nobre face an uncertain future with the Motorsport Italia-run squad following an announcement by Dr Key Segler, senior vice-president of Mini business coordination and brand management, on Friday.

Segler said: "Mini will abandon its works involvement in the WRC at the end of the 2012 season."

FIA World Rally Championship regulations stated that Mini had to contest every round of the season for its WRC machine to fulfil its homologation obligations.

With this to be completed by the end of the season, the budget for running the works cars in 2013 has been withdrawn.

Segler added: "By the end of the season WRC Team Mini Portugal will have competed in every rally in 2012.

"As such, in accordance with FIA regulations, we will have achieved the WRC homologation for the Mini John Cooper Works.

"In doing so, we would have achieved the prerequisites to allow those interested to continue to run the car in the WRC on a customer rallying basis."

Obviously they based their strategy on their F1 experience - build up programme, develop car, start to look competitive, give up for no apparent reason.

I suppose Im in that category of the 'so few'.Me. I dont see it that way at all.Im of the opinion that competitive rallying at its most exciting died a death during the 80s. Days when the likes of Tony Fowkes,Stig Andervang, Tim Brise, Anders Kullang et all could challenge the might of works teams on a more or less equal footing in private machinery.
Nowadays its just a battle of the works drivers with no one else having a look in....And how many works teams again?

Prodrive will continue, they say they try to do a full program next year. We'll see.

Hopefully Hyundai will start competing next year.

True that. Years ago, I heard something along the lines that the powers that be in Bavaria didn't much like seeing their cars spluttered with mud!
Over the years, their half hearted forays into the sport I think bears testament to that. First with the 2002 and then with the original M3...a car that had the measure of the prevailing RWD Opels,Escorts and Vauxhalls of the era....Was never really supported by the works.

Yes, I heard that story as well, and it is quite incredible. Whatever problems the WRC has faced over the last 10 years, it is still only behind F1 in Prestige for drivers/ Manufacturers. Not the DTM..... They (BMW) are quite happy to play the jolly Bavarian..... and I say that as someone who like the DTM.
The Mini was their way of doing the WRC without using the BMW name..... But like virtually all of their Motorsport efforts, it was half hearted....

Latvala going to VW with Ogier next year. They then say that either Sordo or P. Solberg will do the rallyes Loeb won't do and the other will be at Ford. If Sordo goes back at Citroen, P. Solberg would stay at Ford but that would make the move for Ostberg difficult with 2 norvegians in the main team

I would have really liked to see Latvala stay at Ford to be honest...

Silly season is fun though. :)

So:

Citroen:
Hirvonen
Loeb+Sordo/Solberg

Other Citroen:
Neuville
Al Quasimi
Sordo/Solberg for remaining rounds where Loeb is driving (?)

Ford:
Solberg/Sordo
Ostberg?

Other Ford
Tanak?
Novikov?

VW:
Ogier
Latvala

Other VW:
Mikkelsen

Then there is Prodrive saying they hope to do a full season with Mini. And what will Hyundai do next season?

Hanninen apparently has been in talks with Motorsport Italia Mini but they won't be there next year. What about Meeke? Paddon? Breen?

1) standing on the outside of a corner with a race car coming at you - with no barrier between you or the car - is dumb for both the spectator and the organizer.

2) the world economy is not likely to continue to support car racing.

VW and Hyundai will be doing WRC next year?

I guess it won't be too much of a disaster to lose Ford then. Plus no more Loebfest next year either, although I bet he'll win even as a part time driver.. :p

And Mini were barely in it from the beginning, that was a real odd one.

VW will do full season in 2013 with the Polo
Hyundai will do some rallies in 2013 to develop the i20
Mini and Ford both stop WRC as official teams at the end of 2012 but both cars should still be here next year with Prodrive and M-Sport respectively (but without the support of the car makers)

WRC was looking to be very good from next year on. Red Bull will promote the series and with Loeb only in for a partial campaign....

Hyundai will only be in part time to develop the car. In 2014 they will be in full time.

After all these years of only 2 works teams, we end up with still having only 2 next year...

The RedBull news came too late. I thought that maybe both Ford & Mini would give it another year to see how things panned out. Saying that, both put very little budget towards their WRC programmes, so, you reap what you sow.

Yeah, I've never understood Mini's strategy (or lack thereof).

Mini never had any interest in running a WRC team.

Dave Richards approached them (only manufacturers can homologate cars) claiming that he would be available to use the Mini brand to find sponsorship to pay the bills & all they would have to do is homologate the parts & apparently provide engines.
It soon became apparent that he wouldnt be able to find anyone to foot the bill so then Prodrive decided to try to get BMW to cover it instead, which they never had any interest in doing.

Yeah, I've never understood Mini's strategy (or lack thereof).

Guess it was just a brand boosting exercise. They wanted to remind/reeducate the general public/potential customers about Mini's glorious rallying past. And there's no arguing that the WRC Mini, the new together with the old, did look mighty fine on Top Gear...

I would assume Citroen will be gone after 2013. Let's hope Hyundai doesn't half-ass it this time, or else we are really going to be screwed come 2014.
