Does anyone know what's happened to the Roaring Season website in NZ? Been offline for about a week now. I hope it's ok because there was some epic material and photos on there.

The site has been temporarily closed down due to potential hacker problems.
This is being currently investigated and will be up and running again when the issues have been resolved.

Indeed I got several attack alerts, once I opened it last time.

The Roaring Season is up and running again.
It seems there was a hack which not only affected The Roaring Season but quite a few other website forums around the world.

I was told the other day that the Roaring Season forum had some dreadful photos of Thomas Rich's fatal accident at Catalina...

Is that right?

There is one photo from a collection from Bruce Wells which shows Tom Rich's Triumph TR hitting the inside fence on the main straight of a wet Catalina Park.
The car is up on two wheels, but looking at the photo, you wouldn't know the outcome. Looking at the photo again, you could understand how it wasn't going to take much more for it to turn bad.

My main interest is in the fact that it was happening as I was arriving at Catalina for the very first time...

It's amazing how much of Catalina simply could not exist today.

And 'turn bad' it did. From where I was watching - in the pits, near the 'Tunnel' exit [I was driving there that day], it was an horrific sight that will not be forgotten.

Hello

May I ask what happened to this wonderful community, please?

I used to be a member, even if I rarely posted. However, it was a great source. Some months ago, I even changed my password but, recently, I discovered the forum isn't working anymore...

Best Regards

Be patient, Guilherme.
Sometimes it is just a matter of hours or days until a website that is seemingly down is up again.

Thanks!! It isn't properly a matter of hurry, I just asked because it might be down for good.

It goes missing from time to time, I've noticed it not happening for me the past couple of days...

We can only hope, I guess.

Thanks!!! I didn't use it often, so I found it strange and decided to ask, as I believe there are many shared members.

I got banned from there years ago when I found a photographer using my personal photos that he had lifted from here. I complained about it and he claimed free use because he found them on the net.
I then found his thread where he was complaining about how his photos were being stolen off the net so I called him out publicly in his thread. So the admin banned me...

That's a bit rough...

It was similar for me with Ten Tenths. I was told to stop using photos the same size as I use on here, so I did. Then one day one of the main complainants posted a photo larger than I typically used and I called her out.

And they sent me on my way.

I gave up on ten tenths when I was warned for using the word 'bugger' as it was deeply offensive. They are strange buggers.

The reason I was being chastised for using pics (I think it was over 40kb) was that they reckoned that most of their Pommie members were on dial-up so poor that the images killed their connections...

Or something.

It would have been true 25 years ago.

It was certainly less than 25 years ago...

I joined up here in December, 1999, and this was the first forum I used. It was some time, probably a couple of years, after that I joined Ten Tenths and I didn't use it much for a while, maybe a couple more years before I was banned. 20 years ago?

Anyone who's a member could go on there and check my profile, I guess, and get the facts rather than the estimates.

And still there is no Roaring Season...

I'm not doubting they told you that. Commercial broadband started here in 2000. I was a late adopter and cancelled my Compuserve subscription in Jan 2003 when the cable company started supplying broadband in my area. I suspect TT hadn't updated their book of excuses to take account of the new technology.

The joke of it all was that I was on dial-up at the time...

I didn't get broadband until about 2005.

The Roaring Season is still down.

The domain name registration has expired and Steve currently hasn't the time to maintain the site.

Hopefully it will be back up again shortly as for those in NZ and even Australia it has plenty of traffic.  Whether Steve continues to run it or it goes to 'New Management' remains to be seen.

Through TRS, I've even been in touch with long time competitors in the UK I met in the early 1970s.  I'd hate it to fall over.

Ahh OK, I understand. I see they keep posting on Facebook.

Despite the aforementioned controversies, I believe it's a goos source for every kind of motoring competition in Australia and New Zealand.

Facebook is in no way a replacement for decent forums...

It becomes way too hard to find things you've seen even a day or two ago, searching isn't possible.

Absolutely not, it's chaotic... The always had a page, not a forum or group.

One of the best features of TRS is not only the ease of searching past posts, but also the ability to correct errors after submission.  Not possible with many other sites.

It also allows uploading of images directly, unlike some sites that only allow a link to another site.  Maximum image size is only 185kb which also means that pics 'stolen' aren't large enough to be turned into prints of a decent quality.

It is frustrating having to copy images and then shrink them before uploading, but well worth the effort.

I'm one who has donated regularly to keep it going, but I have no idea how much it costs, compared to a personal website, which for me, costs peanuts.  An annual domain fee and something like $40 every few weeks to my ISP for hosting.
