Racing Standard 10 (Ensign?) in 1964

Hi all, I'm trying to find mention or memories of the Standard 10 fitted with a Vitesse engine that was driven at Snetterton in April 1964 by somebody called Llewellyn. I recently made a pattern for a slot car of the Standard 10 and would like to do my own body shell as this car. Can anyone help?

Oh and the other one was David Alexander's Top Gear Racing Mini in bright yellow with a chequered roof and a Weber sticking out of the bonnet. Anyone?

I remember a very quick one raced by Richand Standiland ??????? in the 60s. It was painted grey.

Didn't that car have a broad distinctive stripe along both sides of white/red/white refered to as the jam sandwich ? Don't know which engine it had.

Can I ask why you included (Ensign?) in the title? The Standard Ensign was sometimes confused with the Pennant (a "tarted" up 10) because they were introduced at the same time. The Ensign was a downgraded Vanguard.

A very highly modified Standard 10 was autocrossed in the Leicester area in the late '60's early '70's. Known as the Bog Standard.

I thought Sandilands car was white with orange stripe? It also had painted yellow headlights ( as for continental travel back then) I remember having a good opportunity to watch it at length as he had an awful accident at Paddock and was trapped in the car with headlights ablaze and the hooter blaring. It had minilites if I remember correctly, although all of this could be the result of too much Ruby Port ! :drunk: This would have been approximately circa 1965..........................

Yes I think you are right Sterl, I think it was white with a sort of strawberry wide band right along both sides, I was thinking about 1967 but you might be right.
It was as you say quite a distinctive eye cathing car at the time and went pretty well too. I think it was once on the front cover of C&CC.

Thanks Alan, I never saw Richard race again after that accident, not sure if he did or not, but understand completely if he retired, it was a very bad crash indeed.

Sorry, that does not look fun at all. And running old cars around in those conditions is not good for them at all.

Interesting pictures. That is real very wet winter weather the sort of conditions we used to see the real RAC Rally run in all those years ago . 2000 miles around Britain then was a real test.

Sorry, that does not look fun at all. And running old cars around in those conditions is not good for them at all.

It's fun for the drivers. Not so much fun for navigators (I enjoyed rallying in the wet until I had to open the window or door at a control and got my paperwork wet!) or for the poor miserable marshals, although I see they had positioned themselves in a pub on this occasion, so were very nicely placed for once!

As for the cars, well, they are historic rally cars, this is what they are built for. Better than decaying in someone's garage.

You are dead right, although I think it would have been in late 1966 that the accident took place. I seem to remember that Sandilands was the innocent victim of the notorious Gerry Amato and Ray Calcutt series of incidents off the start line in the then 'free for all' type of saloon car race that invariably ends the days activities at Brands. Poor Sandilands was trapped in the car and subsequently carted off to hospital. As I recall Amato recieved a ban and Calcutt a sharp reprimand. There were about three attempts to start the race, each ending in a shunt going up toward Paddock Bend. In the end the Clark of the Course got everybody together and told them not to be so bl..... silly. But to no avail and it ended in a big accident.

Gerry Amato did come back several years later driving an F5000 Lola but I don't think with too much success. Ray Calcutt of course had a very healthy career.

I must admit I thought the Standard Ten, which I seem to remember had an eight port headed Le Mans Spitfire type engine, was grey in those days. Although it could well have been rebuilt with a different colour scheme.

A little bit of muck never harmed an old car, unless it was left to fester on it afterwards. I am sure these all got a jolly good clean afterwards...

This Bugatti is the former Paris Show car from 1919, whose value doubtless has many noughts at the end, still being used in (muddy) competition ninety years later:

Gerry Amato did F3 in the early '80s he used to buy the previous years successful car and run that.
I bought a Ex Stephen South March 773 in 1984 from him at the time he had 3 other more recent F3 cars. By this time although near the back always in the midst of a bit of controversy

A good account RJE, you reminded me of that day I spent at Paddock, so often, the pack could not get around the first corner !
