I'm not too despondent about that, it could have been much worse. Lewis is great here and he started behind Button last year and won, so I think he can still take the win tomorrow. I'm certainly happier than I was yesterday. :)

TBH ... I am still recovering from 2011... an incident free race will be sufficient for me.

Also, we dont really know the form of the cars in various temps/weather conditions yet... the grid is a lot closer than it looked in Aus, even if the Macca seems to be the best car... I dont have any expectations for tomorrow.

With Webber's starts he isnt a threat to anybody.

Watch out for Webber to make a blinding start tomorrow  .

“The team only discovered there was an issue in the last 48 hours or something like that,” said a clearly disappointed Hamilton.

Amazing!

The Whitemarsh regime screwing Lewis's races is not enough.

Now it's also beginning to happen during qualis. Tsk tsk.

Good job by Lewis,Nico's time was untouchable and SV - FA are behind him so it's not a disaster.

What the hell are you on about? A gearbox problem is a gearbox problem, nothing anybody can do about it. Grow up.

Was Hamilton's best lap done on used tyres?

Coulthard said "scrubbed" set and they made the point his second set were new.

If he didn't have the penalty with his rivals Button 6th and Webber 7th he would have been a cert for the win tomorrow, he can still do it but it will be tough.

Possible but Lewis has never won in F1 from lower than 4th on the grid. This race seems very unpredictable so it will be fun to watch.

PS - Nothing is certain in auto racing by the way. ;)

First for everything but I think best he can hope for is a podium really, i guess it depends where everyone is into turn 1.

Coulthard said "scrubbed" set and they made the point his second set were new.

Which means Hamilton will be on older tyres than Button to start the race. Thats not good, it will nullify Hamiltons advantage around here in at least the first stint. In fact it helps Button even more because if Hamilton had 2 tenths a lap advantage it won't matter on older tyres.

ALso it might hurt Hamilton as he wears his out first Button won't have and knowing McLaren they will leave Hamilton hanging out to dry until Button pit. By this time Hamilton probably already fell off the cliff and into the sea...

It will be interesting to see how McLaren manage this. I'm sure they won't help Hamilton if he needs new tyres because they've ****ed him over in this manner before.

I think Lewis has a good chance of winning tomorrow, if he is not overtaken by anyone at the start, the Mercedes drivers will slow down the pace and he will catch up with them pretty quickly, the only driver that could be a threat in terms of blocking him is Webber (usually a bad starter) or Alonso if he has a great start. I don't think the guys in front have the pace to stop him.

I like how Lewis congratulated Nico on achieving his first pole position, especially saying how proud that he was of him.

I knew the Mercs would go well. It really is a blessing. Hamilton is starting just behind two main rivals and has two well behind. I think if hamilton can pull a clever start he will be in good shape to out pace the front runners. We haven't seen anything really strong out of that lot yet so i think this race is gonna be dynamite on all ends. Hamilton and Button both have to focus on staying out of trouble. Clearly Hamiltons superb speed over one lap was advantageous in neutralizing the damage of that gearbox penalty for tomorrows race.

And with the field so close IMO he'll consistently be on the front row with different people around him at different tracks and over a season that advantage will reap its rewards.

Yep, in hindsight.. but Lewis needed to be out to cover off any other drivers that may have knocked him off 2nd.

If I was Lewis' personal manager/advisor I'd tell him the following:

"You've done what you could in qually. It was an extremely good effort. Lucky for us, Jenson dropped the ball in Q3 and won't be starting too far ahead of us...

Be careful on Lap 1. There'll be some very hard guys all around you. Jenson, Mark, Checo and his very fast Sauber C31, Fernando, Vettel...and then there's that wild one, Grosjean...

Just get through the first series of bends unscathed and then do what you can down the long back straight to gain position...

But even if you don't, just bide your time until DRS Time...and wait for the Mercs to hold everyone up who's ahead. You've got very good race pace and this place ain't like Monaco...so you'll have plenty of opportunity...and it's going to be a long race...

Most importantly, THINK OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

If you finish this race in one piece, you're likely coming out of it either leading the WDC...or within a couple or three points of it.

Just THINK OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP and STAY OUT OF TROUBLE on Lap 1!"

:)

Good luck to Lewis in the race tomorrow! Should be a hum-dinger of a Grand Prix!

Great Qualy from Lewis to minimize the damage, did all he could since Nico was untouchable today. Bit lucky to have his main competitors right beside him but he could use abit of luck now. I'm usualy nervous for the start of the race even with Lewis on pole and now he's in 7th I think i might just have to close my eyes for the start.

;)

The Start is usually worth the price of admission. [Except in the case of the SC Start we had when I was at our epic, marathon of a Grand Prix in Montreal last year.]

This one will be particularly worth it. It'll have to be. It'll be 3 AM in my part of Canada when they leave the starting grid on their warm up lap!

It's going to be exciting! :)

Driver of the day

Buried TWICE by his team in traffic

Fought like the Lewis of old - measured and agressive. He is back.

Lewis had mostly good pace when in clear air, fought well in traffic and made good overtakes without mistakes. Perhaps one or two times he was held up longer than he would have liked, but that was because all the cars in the pack were getting DRS.

I think Nico was untouchable today myself but second would have been a sure thing - great drive from the boy and he maximised his potential considering he always came out behind aggressive drivers who were very hard to pass. Sooner or later he'll get a slice of luck and win a race.

You are all very Happy, but because Hamilton got it almost perfect today...

Hamilton is being treated like a #2 even ahead of Button on championship,he got a stupid first traffic and we had luck that Button didn't have a bigger pace, got pit stop problem and was held too by Vettel later.

I can't be happy,Hamilton first challenger is Button,he is 2,5s behind him and later 13s+... hating mclaren, sry for the rant.
