The fate of the marshal hit by Chico Landi, 1958 500 Km of Interlagos

The 500 km de Interlagos Formule Libre race was held on the high speed outer ring circuit of Interlagos, on Sunday, 07 September 1958.

During the race Francisco "Chico" Landi at the wheel of a Mecânica Nacional 4.5-litre Ferrari - Chevrolet Corvette, hit a flagman Henrique Esteves who sustained a fractured leg and internal injuries. The unfortunate marshal was taken to the Hospital Samaritano in São Paulo.

The newspaper "Folha de São Paulo", issue of Monday, 08 September 1958, reported that Chico Landi visited the injured man at hospital in the morning of the following day. Henrique Esteves' state of health was indicated as improving, he seemed to be out of danger. But, according to different sources, the marshal succumbed to his injuries. His date of death is still uncertain.

Landi managed to restart and eventually finished 5th in the race, ten laps behind the winner Fritz d'Orey in another Ferrari - Chevrolet entered by the Equipe Tubularte of José Gimenez Lopes and Chico Landi.
