Ron Howard's movie 'Rush', covering the James Hunt/Niki Lauda World Championship duel during 1976, features in a planning application to shoot sequences at Blackbushe Airport, alongside the A30 just west of Camberley.

It's quite instructive to study the application and to appreciate some of the embuggerances involved in getting such a project off the ground...

If you have some idle moments, take a look here:

<http://publicaccess1...=LW92VXHZAH000>

Just like the Bourne Wood location which I can see from home here, Blackbushe is easily accessible from London and I am told that this proximity provides production companies with significant cost savings since within a certain radius crews can be expected to commute, thus incurring no extra accommodation costs... Every saving helps - even on big budget Hollywood productions. 'Rush' director is Ron Howard of 'Happy Days', 'A Beautiful Mind', 'Apollo XIII', and 'Frost-Nixon' Interview fame. Pleasant bloke too.

It is not just extra's that will be required but also cars, vans, motorcycles and trucks from the period. Does anyone have any contact details for the company making the film?

Leigh what are you like..!
The makers of this film had a crew at Snett filming last year. But they were filming a general test day and doing several shots of empty track. To be used with computer animation/graphics perhaps? Or just practising filming cars?

I can't remember where but if you look on the net you can find shots of them shooting scenes on a race track already with the McLaren M23.

There are several ladies "of certain age" - and younger - who could answer that question for you

I will probably upset a lot of people by going even further off-thread, but I can't resist repeating the only 'smut' that I ever heard spoken by Eric Morecambe - "She wore black shoes and black gloves, and when she walked towards you she looked like the five of Spades..."

Seeing we are off thread :)

James Bond:Weren't you a blonde when I came in?
Tiffany Case: Could be.
James Bond: I tend to notice little things like that - whether a girl is a blonde or a brunette.
Tiffany Case: Which do you prefer?
James Bond: Well, as long as the collar and cuffs match...

Really enjoyed Ron Howard's Arrested Development. Only problem is that it features highly on "Greatest Shows No One Watched"

Perhaps I should not admit this, but during my Uni years, scarily 8 years ago now, I saw Hemsworth in Home & Away and he was incredibly wooden. I must imagine the fact that he's moved on to Hollywood lead roles that he's improved slightly. Could one claim this movie is getting "Closer each Day".

Looks like the film started accumulating some production traction last year so if it's not getting closer each day Ron Howard will be 'having a problem' :-)

ps Completely off topic was Neighbours still being aired 8 years ago I thought it was closed down when Jason & Kylie hit the big time in Europe ?

I think that in the UK Chan 5 are showing both Neighbours and Home & away these days. What I want to know is who are playing the other drivers. I reckon Brian Blessed could play Harald Ertl as long as he loses a shed load of weight and dyes his beard :)

I was told that if they can obtain contemporary colour footage of any race on the 1976ish era circuits they are perfectly happy to substitute whatever type of car might appear in that original footage with patched-in computer-generated images of the contemporary 1976 F1 runners. It's the background scenery, fixtures, features they would prefer not to get involved in computer-matching. A weird and scary world of fakery, is it not?

Nice shots of the 'replica James Hunt' in action at the Ring - but didn't the M23 actually run sans MARLBORO lettering in the 1976 German GP?

I'm not sure if it's the case here, but in some cases where they were forbidden to race with the cigarette sponsorship they would practise with the adverts and thus get some photos into magazines and newspapers. Later the organisers twigged and banned the cigarette ads for the whole meeting.

I don't have any photo's to prove it but IIRC I am sure all the cars ran sans tobacco advertising/logo's at the Nurburgring in 1976 during practice and the race.

There is a picture in 'Against All Odds' the Eoin Young - Hunt collaboration published in 1977 showing the M23 at the ring completely without 'Marlboro' logo's. The rest of the scheme looks identical to normal apart from the rear wing which seems to have been modified by have the orange Marlboro chevron painted across where the lettering would normally be.

The Minichamps 1/18th Hunt M23 seems to be the car in this guise.

Regards Mike

I wonder if they will be filming at the Monaco Grand Prix Historique? I would think that could be a source of great footage (and they wouldn't have to "erase" any graffiti from the track!). There were twelve 1976 Formula 1 cars there in 2008, the last time I was there, including the Lauda Ferrari. (Shades of "Grand Prix"! Hmmm, maybe as spectators we'd have to get out our "1976" clothes...and grow a moustache and sideburns!)

Youtube clips of the 76 German GP all show Hunt's car without lettering.

(Hunt's car first appears at 0:20)

Wouldn't it be ironic if the film company had jumped through diplomatic and legal hoops in the effort to be allowed to film cars with tobacco advertising at the 'Ring?
The only venue in 76 where it was not permitted and they could have spared themselves the hassle!

I am sure they have computers that can sort out these inaccuracies, question is do the producers have a pedant of sufficient standing to point the inaccuracies out ?

Hunt's McLaren is at the Autosport Show and looks good.......even the Avon slicks have been re-badged Goodyear

Spoke to a couple of people involved and there are four outdoor shoots based around current circuits including Monaco ( They are hoping it will rain at some point for Fuji )

The shooting in the UK is based around a pupose built Pit/Paddock facility

If this happens, lets hope it is well done.

I think Chris Hemsworth will be good (mine you a bit big! - Have you seen Thor(!) - good fun, but I think when they were going to make a flick about James Hunt life it was going to be Alex Pettyfer - how is pretty much the spit of him (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1641117/) and is a good British Actor. Seems now it has morphed into Rush Pettyfer in in the frame http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1979320/

Hunt's weapon of choice for 76 was M23-8/2, is this THE car at the Autosport show and the one being used in the film, I'd be surprised knowing the owner!

From Todd Hallowell, Executive Producer:

"We are hoping to do some filming at Monaco this year. We have had fantastic cooperation and support from HF1 and they would like us to be there as well. It really is a question of whether our limited schedule can include the Monaco event..."

I assume this movie is moving forward nicely and I am very excited. With America finally getting a Grand Prix back it certainly helps Ron being able to sell the project. I have no idea what the budget is.

Do you all think it will be as successful as "Grand Prix"? GP has had a great run since 1966. Does anyone have any idea how much revenue it has generated?

I doubt the film will appear to the purist. I have heard that for logistical reasons, a March is going to have to sub for John Watson's Austrian Grand Prix winning Penske PC4........ :well:

More from Todd Hallowell, Executive Producer:

"...The support from HF1 has been amazing. Niki Lauda has also been very involved in our preparations as well. We hope to create a film that is both entertaining and as historically accurate as possible. As you well know, 1976 was a very memorable season for F1!..."

I heard they are not even going to use the real James Hunt - just some actor who likes like him! Obviously won't be any good then...
