Frankly I would not be displeased if there was nothing about helmets at all in this movie. I have never seen a good movie about helmets. I have only ever seen good movies about people. I hope they do not let themselves get lost in details here.
While I respect your opinion that there was never a good movie about helmets, as has been mentioned The Green Helmet being the exception, I believe if this was a movie just about people there would be absolutely no reason for the two people on which this movie is allegedly based to be called Hunt & Lauda, why not call them Jones and Schmidt and have them drive a McFast & Flaffi ?
Why pull in a director who has made his reputation on getting details correct ?
Why have any historical reference to anything that can be verified as truth or not at all ?
Why fly a photo of the production office with what must be nearly a thousand period photographs on the wall ?
The question is, is history being distorted for entertainment ?
As someone who stood in the peanut gallery while some of that history took place I find it very disappointing that some upstarts from Hollywood should plonk what must be substantial quantities of cash on the table, pretend to be taking care of details, which they could have done for very little additional expense, appropriate names willy nilly and then have the gall to tell us they are not making a documentary.
While this film does not seem to be deliberately distorting history in quite the same way as the 2000 release U571
, you have to wonder is the Hunt and Lauda Story really worth messing with in the name of entertainment ?
The production company are the ones who have appropriated history which is in no need of any spicing, let alone sexing, up.
I genuinely wish the film every success, I even did my bit standing in the peanut gallery for it at Snetterton, I just wish they had left out any reference to anything that is verifiable because inevitably they will have got many things wrong when there was absolutely no need to get any of them wrong, given the number of people who were involved with the story that are mercifully still with us.
If that makes me a miserable rivet counter so be it, give me cold naked and correctly accredited truth over a blur for the sake of entertainment any day.
