I'm shocked to discover stolen bikes are stil turning up at race meetings !

The British Motorcycle Racing Club (Bemsee) has produced a short booklet clearly showing what chassis and engine numbers should look like, along with their forged equivalents. There are also clear descriptions of how ringing and cloning works

I used to play spot the iffy bike at club meetings years ago. There were always a lot Triumph engines that had been attacked by a grinder.

Sadly stolen bikes especially proddy stuff were rife at club races in the early 80's, it was seen as a good way of laundering the cash and turning a roadbike into something more anonymous and less traceable, I can remember being at snett' probably a newmarket meeting when a well known early 80's big bike proddy racer who was also in the bike trade had his collar felt and was led away by the local Norfolk boys in blue just as he was on his way to the collecting area  I seem to remember he spent some time on a free holiday courtesy of her Majesty

I didn't know about Hedges. Outfit racer, Charlie Freeman, was involved with Degens and they both did time. Both were then banned for a period by the ACU for conduct unbecoming.....A real blow for Degens particularly, as wasn't he in the frame around that time for a factory Honda ride, having been invited to test what I think was the 500 four? I liked Degens uber aggressive racing style- he could/should have gone on to bigger and better things?

Around the mid sixties, there weren't too many quicker than him. Could ride anything too.

Former motorbike racer, John Hedges, 47 was jailed for three-and-a-half years last week. He ran the operation which rebuilt stolen motorcycles and engines. The bikes were then given new identities for sale to the public through national motorcycle magazines.
