Just about to set off for Goulburn, with the 'Cooper' Porsche in the trailer. Should be a good weekend.

Indeed it should...

Have you looked up the thread here that started it all?

It was a very well run meeting, with GEAR [Golden Era Auto Racing] type events. Friday saw a nice display of cars alongside the park in Goulburn.

Saturday and Sunday treated us to plenty of regularity type 'racing', and also a hill-climb. Good to catch up with friends.....some I hadn't seen for a long time, and some I hadn't actually met before. There were some fine motor cars there, too. Sorry, but no time to take photos.....maybe someone else got some? All in all, a great [although tiring] weekend.

At the 85th Anniversary last weekend, one for you old timers----a car with a lot of history which hasn't been seen for many years.

The Garlick Alvis, shirley

Exactly. Although, I don't think Mr Willis likes being called Shirley.

Although David Manson has owned the remains of the Garlick Alvis for some 50 years I believe this was the first time it had been publicly seen as an entity and a tribute to David for saving it and to his many friends in assembling it to the stage where it could be seen. As is well known the Alvis went through many stages of reincarnations during its lengthy racing life with most of its vital components being discarded along the way while being replaced with more "modern' items, the engine for instance was replaced with a Terraplane and then a Ford Mercury V8 at various times.

The trophy displayed in the case beside the Alvis is "The Lucky Devil Cup" won by Phil Garlick at Maroubra and after winning it Garlick had "The Lucky Devil" written in big letters across the radiator grille of the Alvis.

The story of the Garlick Alvis has been told many times and is an intriguing account of triumph and tragedy especially for Phil Garlick.

And, of course, the relevance is that the car was central to the original plans for the Grand Prix at Goulburn...

Even though it wasn't there.

Unfortunately Garlick was killed the week before the Goulburn event at Maroubra.

Correct... but he was one of the promoters of the event, perhaps the key man...

He would have been there.

No, only if he hadn't died...

And then in the Alvis.

Didn't make it due to work commitments.
They used to say "Work is the curse of the drinking man", but it is also the curse of the motor sport enthusiast.

I wasn't working or drinking...

I was just too far away.

On second thoughts, I was probably working on the F5000 book, but that's in another dimension.
