F1 fans are so fickle, when there is "MAXIMUM ATTACK" and no overtaking you complain wanting more overtaking. And when there's overtaking combined with tyre management and fascinating strategy you still complain!
More overtaking does not necisarily mean better racing.
I was actually largely happy with what we had Pre-2011, Overtaking could have been a bit more possible but I think what we have now has taken things too far the other way.
While there was a lot more passing through 2011 I actually didn't find the racing better I thought it was more dull as the passing be it due to tyre wear or DRS was often uncontested & thus not really that exciting to watch.
There was also many occasions where you knew a pass was going to happen because the lead car was on older tyres or because DRS was very efficient that weekend & that took away a lot of the enjoyment of watching the race.
Speaking personally I have always loved watching a good racing scrap between 2 or more cars, One where the slower car has the opportunity to hold off the faster car behind, in which the car behind has to seriously work to pull off a pass & in which the eventual pass is not guaranteed & can't necisarily be seen coming.
I look at races like Imola 2005/2006 & those 2 great battles between Schumacher & Alonso, I loved those 2 races because you had the 2 guys fighting flat out for the win & you never knew if a pass was going to happen or not. Go back a bit further & look at Spa 2000, Great scrap between Schumacher & Hakkinen, Schumacher was able to defend & Mike had to pull something special out the bag to make the overtake.
In 2011 there was a couple occasions where this was possible (Spain, Monaco & Schumacher/Lewis at Monza) but all too often those sort of multi-lap scraps were not possible as differences in tyres & DRS made passing in some cases predictable & in most cases un-exciting.
It was actually intresting through 2011 to see fan reactions at various races. The races in which DRS & the Pirelli's were most effective were actually the races which got a lower fan-rating, It was actually some of the more traditional type races (Where tyre degredation wasn't bad, DRS wasn't effective & there wasn't as much passing) which got the best fan-ratings.
Also when you had the top-10 passes of 2011 discussed no DRS passes or passes due to tyre wear differences were included.
