I'm so damn desperate for this year's racing to start....

2012 50th Anniversary Rolex 24 at Daytona is the traditional start of the racing year (Dakar and the Monte notwithstanding)

So let's kick off 2012 NOW.

Been looking forward to this for a long time! The cars for the first time in a while look like racing cars! With Motors TV screening it, I was hoping to watch it... But I have prior engagements, still I'll record the last portion, and hopefully stay away from hearing any results!

The last few events have been amazing and no doubt some of the best racing I've watched. It's certainly a perfect way to kick start the racing season!! If this is not your cup of tea, I urge you just to listen to the RX-8 for a lap. It's sensational. But those who followed Mazda's Group C efforts will know what I mean, rotary racing engines, fragile, not very fuel efficient but they more than make up for them flaws simply by the way they sound!

Never watched it before, but I'm going to try to watch a but of it tonight. I'll probably support the Dixon/Franchitti/McMurray/Montoya car as well as it is the only one where I know a couple of the drivers.

Oops, right Daytona is this weekend, gotta change some plans.
Thanks for the links Jp

Mainly interested in the GTs and cheering for the Risi Ferraris.
DPs meh but at least some of the cars look a bit better, hoping a Ganassi car won't win again.

Strange phenomenon Daytona, don't like the Prototypes, track is so so, miss half the race due to time difference and hate the many cautions but still look very much forward to it every year as it kind of signals the start of the racing season to me.

I too had forgotten about Daytona!
For me this is also the kickstart of the season, and to be fair it is when it comes to closed circuit racing.

Very excited already, should be a great event! Corvette-bodied DPs make it up for the otherwise small prototype field, but the massive 45-car GT armada is the main dish...

Could someone explain the speedtv web stream please? Is it free live coverage - Radiolemans tweet just hinted that no legal steaming of the race in the UK. Will be tuned in RLM anyhow, but pics would be good too!

Its an onboard stream, of selected cars during the race. A bit the red button service for f1.

Of course, if you checked that funny corner of the interwebtubebook i'm quite sure you could find some pictures. I might be wrong, but I dont think any network is covering the whole 24 straight.

Hoping the GT battle lives up to spec, very limited proto entry. Those horrible vette jobs are utter balls. (Sorry Sonny!)

Also, I presume Brian Johnson is taking the place of a more talented driver after he kicked the bucket, and in doing so leaves a team that nobody would ever have heard of otherwise? Har har.

Well while I do like them, it is true that in the end they are just copy-and-paste bodyworks fitted into external chassis, with Chevy engine. Not much to play with

But even you must admit that they look better than those horribly ugly DPG2s ;)

Jon - Thanks for all the info, I too am anxious for the start.

I'm mainly watching the David Donohue/ Darren Law car. A good friend with a Donohue Javelin is down for the race and got to spend a half hour with David yesterday. I understand they are starting at the back due to a blown engine during qualifying in their new Corvette. It should be a car to watch as they were fast prior to the problem. A good and safe race to all the drivers and workers.

If it's worth anything, the ones I'm going to follow:
DP - All the Corvette DPs
GT - Risi and Flying Lizards entries + Michael Baughman vette, also Magnus Racing because of Justin Bell

I'll be following the 'All-star' Ganassi 02 car, with Dario etc. in DP's, and also the Spirit of Daytone Corvette DP, as that's got a great lineup as well (Gavin, Magnussen, Westbrook and Garcia).

In GT I'll be following the Flying Lizards Porsche as usual, and the Risi Fezza's. The #67 TRG Porsche is a good lineup as well (Henzler, Bleekemolen, Pumpelly, Goossens) so that could one to watch...

I'll be cheering on the 40 and 41 Mazdas of Dempsey Racing, run by Patrick Dempsey who some of you may know as Doctor Derek Shepherd from Grey's Anatomy.

Seems that he's spending his actoring salary on building up his race team, nice work if you can get it :)

He was at lemans last year too. Not too shabby behind the wheel, for a thesp.

And the first big one of the year and the woman decides a nice meal out is in order. BAH. AND HISS.

Dempsey wasn't at Le Mans last year (apart from doing some interviews for Eurosport), but in 2009 with GT2 Ferrari.

His team will be running in ALMS's LMPC class this season, possibly also in P2.
