When Watson stood in for the injured Niki Lauda at the 1985 European GP at Brands Hatch (his last F1 GP) he carried #1 on his McLaren.

Has any other driver since Ronnie Peterson in 1974 carried number 1 without being the defending World Champion? I can't think of any.

SFAIK after that the #1 traveled with the reigning champion, which led to Arrows running the #1 & #2 IIRC. In the two years that the reigning champions declined to defend their championships at all Damon Hill ran the #0.
