I was just thumbing through my old Autocourses, and it struck me that McLaren raced with the numbers 7 & 8 in 1993 when, according to the numbering convention at the time, they should have inherited Williams's numbers (5 & 6) from 1992.

Does anyone know if there was a logical reason for this occurring, or was it just a case of someone at the FIA making a typo on the entry list?

Okay, sorry about that, point taken.

But I still didn't find an answer.

I think I shall write to Ron...

Lookig through those earlier threads, I find this suggestion makes the most sense to me:

Just a guess: 1&2 (OK, in fact 0&2) were for Williams, 3&4 for Tyrrell; 5&6 and 7&8 were free.
Maybe they gave 5&6 to Benetton and 7&8 to McLaren because Michael Schumacher (Benetton) finished ahead of Ayrton Senna (McLaren) in the previous year, 1992?
And before you say: yeah, but Mclaren was ahead in the WCC - that logic was only applied from 1996 onwards!
