I am looking for the history and original owner of Cooper MK 8 56. Jack "AJC" Newton raced this car mid-1958 until 1960. I am looking for three things
1. Images of this car or the race from 1958. August 4th 1958 Brands Hatch, August 9th Silverstone, August 30th Brands Hatch, September 27th Goodwood, October 5th Brands Hatch
2. Any information on who Jack may have purchased the car from in 1958. The car had a burman AjS 7r race gearbox, short stroke Beart Motor, lowered lightweight seat, lowered tank etc..
3. Images from Jack's crash at Brands April 18th 1960.

Thanks,

Chris

This site reckons he had a Mk X in 1958 - did he have a choice of two at the time, or is this site incorrect?

This site also reckons he had the Mk X 1958-61

2 observations  #1 500race site is not to reliable re car mk"s they tend to flit about in the race results ( ie xxx mk 10 next entry xxxx mk8 when the guy has never owned a mk10) #2 why would the car be listed on 2nd site as running methonal in 58 I"d have thought in fact i"m pretty sure that by then all the Norton engine cars were petrol fueled. can not remember looking into the bell mouth of carbs with motors running & not seeing a needle  which was usually absant when methonal fueled

Have you tried Neil Hodges, who I think had some contact with Jack's son when Jack died?

You have my picture of Jack's car in your website.  I would have said that it was a Mk VIII as I know it was an older card when Jack acquired it.  My distant memory says that it might have been built for a V twin engine.  Jack was very tall and needed a long car.  I am six foot, with long legs, and I could sit in this car, comfortably, without sticking up like Jack did.

as the original post was from Chris Frank, I would suggest were are discussing Cooper mk10 chassis 8/56 (not a mk8?)

According to Harry Reynolds, Bob Wenz claims to have bought a Cooper mk10 directly from Jack Newton and this was the car that Jack crashed in 1960 - this is the car that is/was owned by the Frank family.

Bob is listed in the period information/photographs as mk10 #539 in SCCA events in 1962.

as for Cooper mk numbers in results, you always have to take these with a pinch of salt - the cult of the chassis number didn't exist a Cooper was a Cooper, driver swapped/borrowed cars - they still do - in the results for the Don Truman trophy in 2008 I am down Cooper mk2 JAP in race 1 DNF and 2nd in race 2 ( 2nd was due to being in a mkXI Norton double knocker!)

The chassis is definitely a Mk X (1956 model type), with the necessary chassis details. What stubbornly refuses to be answered is which (presumably big) name originally purchased chassis no.8

The methanol restriction did not come into force until the 1959 season.
