As 29 February slips away for another four years, spare a moment to reflect that had circumstances been different, Masten Gregory would have been celebrating his eightieth birthday today.

Alas I was too young to witness his exploits, having my first taste of Formula 1 as an eleven year old in 1966, but as a youngster I enjoyed reading about him, noting that he shared my myopia.

It was always a comfort to me that being a specatacle wearer need not hinder my imaginary racing career...

Well looks like we are the same age and yes I remember him as well yet you remembered him earlier then me I got into racing big time in 1969 and my first
car race was the 1970 Riverside Can Am with the Chaparral 2J the sucker car so got to see it live then got to see it again when they were the featured Marque at the Monterey Historics so was able to get some nice pics then.
We lost so many in the 60's and 70's the 80's were better but it wasn't untill McLaren came out with a carbon fiber chassis that would flex rather then crush that drivers were really safer and I applaud McLaren for not inforcing their patent in the interest of safety for all that we have the era of very few drivers dying no matter what form of racing so I wish that Maston could have been in a different era along with so many other drivers.

I am fortunate (and old enough!) to have seen Masten race many times at various English circuits and I could quite easily have mentioned some of them in the 'Jaw Dropping Moments' thread, especially the time he stepped off the Ecurie Ecosse Lister-Jaguar and joined us trackside spectators at Silverstone's Becketts Corner!. Masten was a spectacular driver, always great to watch and I was a fan. The sight of Masten sliding through a corner in the Centro-Sud 250F was a wonderful one that remains firmly in my memory.

Well, I too am old enough to have seen him race. Unfortunately, the one race I attended where he was entered -a USRRC race at Riverside - (1966 or 67) he arrived at the track after the race started. The official story was that since it was the daylight savings time change day, he had the time wrong. Hummmmm.
