Tio's a good driver, impressive in Formula Ford, jumped to Formula Renault UK last year and consistently at the front at the front finishing P3. I think He'll be near the front eventually.

Also, Alice Powell had some issues in practise yesterday and she's doing a good job so far, compared to the other female racers she's doing great.

Powell's probably the only one of the female drivers who deserves to be in GP3 this year, hopefully she'll manage to finish in the points. Looking at the overall grid, it's pretty weak, outside Carmen Jorda and Vicky Piria, there's no way that Wartique, Cregan and Klasterka deserve to be on the grid either. Disappointing.

Brundle P13, Powell P18

Jorda P24, Piria P25 ;)

Ridiculous how little the kids look in their mirrors as well.

It is, Will Buller weaving when a car on a hot lap is right behind was a touch silly.

Watching the timing & felt Brundle could of done a bit better, constantly getting traffic on pretty much all but one of his laps, although it was the same for virtually everyone though, Monaco is going to be insane!

Monaco qualy will be in two halves. Less time, but also less other cars to hit ;)

No real surprises with who the main protagonists are.

I know Buxton's ex-wife is Powell's PR, but the "brilliant lap for P16!" stuff is going to get annoying rather quickly. Yes she's doing better than Piria and Jorda (which isn't saying much), but surely there are more aspirational heights for female drivers than 'not last'.

(And yes, I know she had problems yesterday. But her pace has not looked anything remotely special)

Yes that stuff is rather wince-making isn't it? I remember some of the Formula Renault coverage... :(

I would have thought that his ex doing Alice's PR would make him want to slag her off and not the reverse myself. Amicable split I guess?;)

I think they were/are both helping her out, Will posted a very press release-ish feeling "one to watch" article about her on his blog a while back. Not that he's not entitled to other interests outside of commentary of course, but it would be nice if he could keep it out of the booth.

No surprises about that penalty for Ellinas.

I didn't realise how many female racers there were in the field. Looking at this, and Indy Cars, it's clearly a question of when rather then if one star reaches F1.

I wonder why he stopped the car just on the track mid-corner? Couldn't he even steer it off the track?

If the engine or gearbox go they can seize in place.

Great start to the season Evans. Pity for Felix da Costa who's jump start didn't really give him an advantage - certainly compared to Apt's.

That Uncle Ellinas guy (tio = uncle in portuguese :drunk: ) seems talented indeed, I don't think I've ever heard of a cypriot driver before? Where's his backing coming from? Drivers from these odd countries seem to climb the ranks only whether they're really good or funded by their governments!

Eftyhios (Tio) has absolutely no backing from the government. We've never had a Cypriot driver before so it's pretty exciting to see what he can do. We don't have much following of the GP3 series in Cyprus (almost didn't get F1 either this year) so it's hard to keep track of what he's doing. But yes we're pretty passionate here as was displayed by the thousands of Cypriot fans that followed APOEL FC around during the UEFA Champions league.

Here's more info on Tio for anyone who's interested:

Had other commitments so I missed the first race - which is a shame, because engine noise aside I've enjoyed watching this series in the past couple of years. Jumping the start is a pretty fundamental mistake so I can't say the penalties were undeserved, regardless of how little advantage was gained. Still, it's a lesson learned and I'm sure neither will be doing it again any time soon!

I didn't realise how many female racers there were in the field. Looking at this, and Indy Cars, it's clearly a question of when rather then if one star reaches F1.

Until one of them looks remotely like challenging for a competitive title then it's still 'if'.

Powell throws a kamikaze around the outside and takes out Ringel and Wartique:

Buxton - "What a shame for Powell to be taken out"

 Although I have seen some people say it wasn't her fault - accurate or not?

She flew around the outside of T2 on the opening lap and spun. Ringel a few cars behind immediately spun and as Powell went into the gravel she collected Wartique.

That article was written before will and Emma split up.

aside from that, Will has a soft spot for Powell. God knows why, because as you rightly point out Emma does her PR.

As for an amicable split? No it wasnt. They got all bitter in both paddocks and on twitter. It was weird seeing. Them in an F1 paddock for the first time together last year in India. To be honest though, she is one of the most un-trustworthy and malicious people I have ever come across so who can blame Will?

Anyway..... Back to racing. Tio Elinas is a mega talent. He has spent quite a bit of time over the winter on the red bull simulator. I believe they were or are still eyeing him up.

Had sort of guessed from what I'd seen on Twitter that it wasn't amicable but I wasn't going to comment as obviously I don't know them personally or what their situation is.

The teams don't have to run 3 cars this year so my guess is that Trident will only run two unless someone with a hefty budget comes along and makes running a third car worth their while.

Despite the silly mistake in quali I think Ellinas could be one to watch for the future. Not sure he can take the title this year, but he could definitely challenge. Thanks for posting that article PARAZAR, interesting stuff.

I think someone needs to take the drivers aside and explain the start procedure and the rules regarding yellow flags, half the field seem to be unaware of them - More jumped starts and ignored yellow flags.

Alice Powell, 25th on the grid to finish 11th, not bad for her first actual race having been punted off on turn one yesterday.

Split quali might make a bit of a difference. Evans and Daly look quick (the former in particular) but are going in the first session, which if it stays dry will likely be a disadvantage.

What do you know? Vainio actually got pole. A big step up from where he was last year, it seems. We could potentially even get a second Finnish champion in a row!

Alice doesn't seem too bad. She qualified 12th.

the order in hungarian is Kiss Pál Tamás, Kiss is the family name, Tamás is the one he uses as a first name. for my hungarian ears Kiss Pál is perfectly fine, he even pronounces it right. also we had a famous alter band here named Kispál & borz, so we're used to it... :p

talking about Tomi, great result! :)
and about the finnish dude in the lotus... I'd like that on sunday too. :smoking:

Think Will mentioned it was the 'correct' Hungarian last race. Can't remember if he asked Tamás himself though. Good drive by him today anyway. Thought he was in for a hard time of it after Atech's horrible lack of pace in pre-season testing, which would be a shame as he seems reasonably talented.

Soporific race, but Vainio seemed really on it. Nightmare for Daly. Brundle still determinedly mediocre. Powell managed not to suck. And Piria managed not to qualify on the last row for once ;)

And finished 11th. Watching both GP2 and GP3 tells me that they both need DRS. Daly fluffed his start and that was the only change in order of the first 13 cars, they might as well have flagged it at the end of the first lap and saved the teams a lot of money.

What, so having pointless, constant overtaking is better even though it simply comes from pressing a button, rather than having some skill?
