I am currently compling some magazines for my personal research about the Montjuic Park, the old Osterreichring and the Birmingham Superprix. I am still on lookout for many magazines that covered Formula One and Formula 3000.

As I am only 29 years old (I was only three year old when the first Birmingham Superprix started in 1986!) and I still haven't got a much of an idea which motorsport magazines that have covered F1 and F3000.

So far I know:

Autosport (UK weekly magazine)
MotorSport (UK monthly magazine)
Autocar (UK weekly magazine)
Motor (continued until 1987 when it merged with Autocar - UK weekly magazine)
Motoring News (UK weekly newspaper)
Motor Racing (UK monthly magazine)
Autocourse (UK, French and Italian annual book)
F3000 (UK, French and Italian annual book)

Autosprint (Italian weekly magazine)
Rombo (Italian weekly magazine)

Auto Hebdo (French weekly magazine)

Sport Auto (French magazine, not sure how often they release their magazines)

Motor Sport Aktuell/Powerslide (German weekly magazine in a newspaper format)

On Track (American monthly magazine)

What other European (or perhaps international) publications that have covered F1 and F3000? I am interested to know if any American publications have covered F1 and F3000 as Autosport and Motoring News (not sure about MotorSport) have covered CART and NASCAR in small detail.

I hope anyone can help out there and perhaps point out which specific issue number that have covered a F1 or F3000 race so I can look it up on eBay.

Thank you very much.

Italics are the new additions.

Motor and Autocar were both weekly

As you suspect, your list is far from complete as regards Continental publications, but others will be in a better position than me to help you with those

You could also add Motor Racing (monthly) to your British list, and the annual Autocourse was in invaluable source, esepcially, IIRC, for F3000

Thank you for the addition of Motor Racing, what year did it cease publication?

I can't answer that - it was certainly going well into the 1960s

There was an entirely different monthly publication of the same name for a year or two from 1985 - also good for F3000

Their yearbook was available up to 1978, if that's any help to you.

There would have to be German magazines...

Michael Ferner might be a good source of information about them.

And there might be something from Switzerland too.

There was the monthly 'Powerslide' in the sixties till the mid seventies, it changed to the weekly 'Motorsport aktuell' eventually. Both are in German and are of Swiss origin.

I would think the yearbooks kept going long after the monthly ceased (but might be wrong...)

Have a look out for Grand Prix International (published in English, French and possibly Italian?) for the period 1979 until somewhere in the mid-80's. Originally F1 only, but then spread to sportscars, rallying and, I am almost sure, race reports of F3000. These often come up for sale on eBay and, despite some poor translation from French to English in the early copies, they are great.

Also, Motor Sport UK magazine have recently done a feature on Montjuic Park - either the current issue or the one preceding it.

Enjoy the journey!

'Automobile Sport' ran as a monthly in 1983. Nice quality magazine, but it didn't last long. It spawned a couple of hardback annuals as well, which are still relatively easy to find.

I think the Montjuich track test was several years ago.

Long time ago Ray but I think they got someone local to take them around in his own car.

What about Auto Motor Sport? (a German publication)

Would it have covered F1 and F3000 or it just focuses on road cars?

Thanks - I may have confused this with a back copy of Vintage Racecar (USA) magazine which I read through recently - apologies if I did!

Does any of the European magazines provide a F3000 season preview/review?

I know Motoring News and Autosport does that but what about the other magazines?

Thank you.

There have been at least 6 books covering a season of F3000 racing. I have 1987-1992. They originate from France but are bilingual, French/English. Some of them also contain Italian. Common author (among others) is Stephane Barbé.

It's outside your particular triumvirate of circuit subjects (and possibly outside of your interest altogether...) but there is a Michel Vaillant strip cartoon edition all about an F3000 race at Pau.

I got all of the 1986-1990 yearbooks covering the F3000 races at the Birmingham’s Superprix. Thank you for your suggestions.

Another source of information on Birmingham Super Prix results would be found in 'A Record of Grand Prix & Voiturette Racing. Volume 12 (1985-1989) & Volume 13 (1990).

These give full Entry lists, Starting Grid, Results/Retirements.

I believe I got it covered in my research including driver replacements or proposed entries or specifically like a retirement at a certain point of the circuit. I tend to do my research very thoroughly! Thank you for your suggestion though.

As I can't edit the title of this thread, it should be "International publications covering F1 anf F3000" now

As I have recently found out that the On Track magazine (which is American) have covered the F3000 series with their race reports and reviews.

Also I have added Motor Sport Aktuell/Powerslide (German and Sport Auto (French) into the list as well.

Is there any more magazines and other publications that covered F3000 particularly in other countries?

Period Japanese magazines such as 'Auto Sport', 'Auto Technic' and 'Car Graphic' covered national (Japanese) racing as well as some amazingly in-depth coverage of international events. There were many other general motoring magazines which carried coverage of major events too.

Contemporary magazines such as 'Racing On' often look back at period cars, races and formulas. Racing On's special 'Archive' issues are superb, as are Auto Sport's Archive series '100 Great Races' magazines, which are each dedicated to one particular period Japanese race event. Recommended.

Do you have access to those Japanese magazines?

So if I can post the dates of the Birmingham Superprix F3000 races then could you find the relevant magazines then I could have a look online or eBay for a copy of those magazines.

Thank you.

The Birmingham Superprix dates are a little late for my main interest. I tend to focus between roughly '64 and '82-ish.

I have no doubt that the main Japanese magazines carried coverage of the Superprix events, but without access to the actual magazine issues in question I can't tell you which ones to buy, as there may have been a delay of anything between two weeks and two months between event and coverage, considering gap between reports filed, photos received and printing schedule for each publication. Japan was further away 'then' than it is 'now'... :drunk:

You might need to aim blind, and buy magazines published within that reasonable gap of two weeks to two months after each event.

No problem, I appreciate your help regarding about the Japanese magazines, I am sure there will be some interest in 1986 with Satoru Nakajima driving a Ralt-Honda in 1986.

I will have a look on eBay or online to see if there is anything I can find.

Anyway, what about Auto Motor Sport? It is a German car magazine and I can see they do cover motorsport but what about F3000 from 1986-1990?

I can't speak with total authority here since I rarely ever bought or even only read the magazine (which may tell you something on its own...), but Auto Motor und Sport usually had decent coverage of F1 and the leading German series of the moment, and little else besides. F3000? Maybe half a paragraph and the top six results at times when a German did very well (e.g. 1985), but otherwise probably totally ignored.

I am not too fussed, any mention of the Birmingham Superprix races will do for me!

Even the Motor Sport Aktuell only did less a half a page in 1986 for the wet F3000 at Birmingham.

I will have a look to see if there is any online archives of the magazine itself.

What about the L'Equipe newspaper from France?

As I found an article in the old Motor magazine in 1987 stating that there were some journalists from L'Equipe covered the 1987 Birmingham Superprix. Would it mean the newspaper would have had some coverage of the F3000 races?

Portuguese journals AutoSport, Volante and Motor provided very good reports on F3000, while Turbo magazine had also small coverage.

Being a big fan of Formula 3000 as i watched it as a teenger when it started in 1985, I'd suggest getting the Marlboro Championship Media Guides which ran from 1988 to 1992 and most of them were written by longtime Eddie Jordan PR Mark Gallagher. Someone is selling all 5 on ebay at the moment.

Also the French Michel Vaillant series by Jean Grabon did a comic book called F3000 mainly on the 1988 season as they were involved in the Sport Auto team, although it's set in Pau it does cover all the french drivers in the championship that season.

Finally there is a book, again from France covering all the stats and results from the series between 1985 to 2002 by ERDA communications published in 2003 and has all the data from the 5 races in Birmingham.
