Porsche has just announced that Ferdinand Alexander Porsche has passed away at age 76. The company's official announcement:

Matthias Müller, President and Chief Executive Officer of Porsche AG, paid tribute to Ferdinand Alexander Porsche’s services to the sports car manufacturer: “We mourn the death of our partner, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. As someone who has own 6 Porsche I had great admiration for him. The 911 is a very, very special design. God Bless your soul.

Butzi, thanks for the best car I have ever owned, my cherished 1973 911RS.
Rest in peace.

Such a creative life that affected so many enthusiasts. My '65 912 reminds me of him every day. His first iteration of the 911/912 body was by far the best.

Wow, that's big news all right. What a brilliant man, my Dad's also got a 911 and we've long had jovial debates about Porsche vs. Ferrari.

The 911 is certainly an automotive benchmark so add my RIP to the list. Sad Loss.

Oddly, I just got my 928 back yesterday, its been away for a long time getting repaired after having a nasty fight with a collapsing drain... I know its not a "purist" Porsche, and not one of Ferdinands, but still, we had an nice drive today. I had been thinking the whole time that I cant see myself ever not owning a Porsche... The first thing I read when I got back was this thread.

I know there are some on this forum who "dis" the 911 but I would suggest the 911 and it's derivatives won more races than any other sports car in history.
