Talking with a friend in the pub recently, the conversation turned to the now-defunct Ace Trump cards we used to avidly collect back in the late 1970s. From the depths of the loft then, here some scanned images taken from said cards - they are a bit grainy when enlarged, but make for an interesting "who / what / where / when". I've left in the marques as a starter for ten............

F2's to start with........

I remember a short DSJ piece on a set of Top Trumps cards he had bougth. It transpired that half the pictures were of "replica" [or look-alike] cars being used to film Grand Prix which he found disappointing because it would mislead young would-be fans.

I've got a set of 70's/80's Top Trumps that I remember featured the totally awesome looking Stommelen 936 "Black Widow" Martini car... I'll have to dig em out and hook the scanner up if I can! One of the best looking liveries ever in my opinion despite the fact the white ones were favoured long term...

were there any around back then (a bit before my time)? My wife always says one of the best things about motor racing is that it's one of the few events where there's never a queue at the ladies' loos ...

I seem to remember that in one set I had, titled something like "Cars", the card to have was the Ferrari 312T.

Here you are then Gatmo - a clutch of 1970s Super Vees. If you are able to name the drivers and car model numbers on this little lot, I'll be very impressed. I can't.....

Women or Top Trumps? :)

Top Trumps were definitely on the go around the mid 70s when I was at secondary school.

Monteverdi 375 is the one I remember from a Sports Cars set. Stonking great 7.2 litre engine, so it was fast and powerful (on card at least!)

I had, maybe still have, a German set I bought in Trier in 1976. They were caleld "Heisse Offen" or similar, HotRods I guess. They were Sprortscars, Interserie, and some British Supersaloons, all pics taken in 1975 I think. Superb!!

Presumably this dealer knows his subject and his description of 'rare' is accurate - or is it simply that any 1970's pocket money toy is now rare.

I emailed the makers after buying a set in the early 80's to point out a few pages of innacuracies. God I was bored at University!
