History of test drives

the tests are very limited since some years because there was an influence of tests in the last years: 1998 Ferrari had 165 test days! In 1999 only 100 test days per team were allowed - and only with at least three teams were testing on the same track. But the teams didn't really accept that rules.
I think Ferrari was the first team with an own test track (Fiorano) in the 70s.
What can we also say on history of tests. How was that in the past?
Today we have very little test drives and more and more tests in the simulator.

If the latter, it may be of some interest to explore how teams tested back in the past, before the sort of organised common test sessions that we saw in recent years. I recall that some teams tested at Goodwood for instance, after the end of formal racing there, and others at Snetterton. Lotus used Hethel of course (so Ferrari's Fiorano was the grande marque copying the garagiste!).

A sketchy overview of what we know about 1967 - different times, not only because of the seemingly randomness but also the lack of information!I am not clear if this is about special test drives by individual drivers or about testing by teams?

In the 1970s things already got quite a bit more organized IIRC, if only because of the cooperation with the tyre companies.
