Any idea when Lotus will announce their second driver? Guess they're still weighing up their financial position before they decide whether to keep Grosjean or not.

I don't think they're going to have financial issues considering that they seemed to have picked up quite a few big name sponsors recently. Additionally it would be a waste to stick with Grosjean during his training year and ditch him after going through all that.

Also, on a personal note, I've just realized that Gutierrez is less than a year older than me... :(

There goes my fantasy dream of ever becoming an F1 Driver :stoned:

You just experienced something that all F1 fans surely go through. :)

I remember when the rookies started being younger than me a few years back. It made me feel a little awkward!

Joe Saward was sounding upbeat about Vitaly, but as ever reports suggest everything is up in the air.

I think Jaime is going to end up as the Force India reserve driver and he will get a decent amount of Friday practice sessions.

Grosjean's destiny to be decided this week according to Autosport.

But don't expect surprise.

Wait until those same drivers start retiring. It hurts when you have seen a drivers whole F1 career.

I've seen the whole F1 career of Markus Winkelhock. It didn't seem to be a particularly painful feeling. Pretty entertaining race I would say.

Ah interesting, just noticed this in an article about D'Ambrosio.

He was signed by Lotus as its reserve driver this year and returned to racing when he replaced Romain Grosjean at the Italian Grand Prix while the Frenchman was serving a one-race ban.

With only Marussia, Caterham and Force India yet confirm their second drivers, d'Ambrosio concedes it is hard to find a place on the grid.

By that, I assume Autosport are certain Grosjean will be there next year :( .

Continuity would be pretty important on the 2nd driver front for Lotus, IMHO. They need a good sim development driver now their sim is up and running, and KR cannot do sim driving, just like MS. RG is pretty seriously backed, and is very fast. I'd say 99% they keep him, and try to cure his head. They can still dump him mid-season, if it doesn't work out, as cruel as it seems.

This will be interesting. Both Adrian and Jaime are touting seats for 2013. The game of musical chairs goes on.

I didn't know the countdown had disappeared from his website at some point (I suppose because I didn't check it). Was it really gone?

Nah, he had his time and didn't impress. If he's on the rid next year rather than Kobayashi and Grosjean, then there's something wrong with F1. Besides, the visa problems are surely going to deter any team from signing him - as there's at least 4 races he'd potentially miss.

Nah, he had his time and didn't impress.

He did impress me.

I have the impression that he would have scored more points this season than all drivers who found themselves in a threat of not having a racing seat next year.

I'm not going to argue about this, though.

 I have the same opinion.
He did very well in 2011 (best of the non-Top-Team-drivers).

AUTOSPORT SAYS
F1 editor Edd Straw

Lotus would be mad to cast off Romain Grosjean now. While he made too many mistakes in 2012 and there are very serious questions over his ability to assess risk while on track, he is simply too fast to be discarded.

Agreed, he is very fast and was more than a match for Kimi in Quali and during some of the races in the first part of the year.

But once Kimi shook the rust off and started to assert himself in the team (his steering issues, radio to pit wall asking RG to move over etc.) Romain got rattled and the mistakes started.

Lotus should hire Kamui as a reserve driver, with the understanding that RG is to stay out of trouble or get replaced.

Well, Sutil performed at a decent level for five seasons; Heidfeld had several opportunities, but didn't set the world on fire; and Montoya left.

Sutil wasnt that great :/ this 'best of' video pretty much sums up how much of an accident prone driver he was, very near the same level as grosjean:

I think Edd straw is as confused as the Lotus team itself regarding weather or not to give Grosjean 2013 contract

... Taking a conservative second driver as a solid points banker over a potential superstar – and Grosjean really is fast enough to be just that if he can calm down – would be a disappointingly conservative step for a team that considers itself ambitious, creative and upwardly mobile.

you need a solid points banker for WCC, flashes of speed is good but it's still flashes. the current available options in the marke i.e kamui and jaime both have showed flashes too, problem was they didn't at any point in their career had E20 level car beneath them. Grosjeans plus point seems to solely to be blizting in qualy and get on the podium because he qualified high, or tire choice as in Canada i believe. Lotusf1 should think long term stability and potential speedstar at the same time ... perhaps they should split 2nd seat between Grosjean and kamui depending on tracks :p

P.S we should do a poll, how many crashes/incidents would it take for Grosjean to be fired like Nick in 2013??? i'd say 2.

Yeah, but in how many races? 2 incidents in 10 races could be acceptable while 2 in 4 not so much.

Melbourne? Massa will win it.

I think it's a joke if Grosjean keeps his seat. He's been the same nutcase since the beginning of his career, including his failed 2009 debut. He will probably never learn. Lotus lost a lot of money because of Grosjean they couldn't fight for the 2nd place in WCC. I'd take a chance at Kobayashi or Kovalainen for a season, then evaluate the situation for 2014.

Because it is really LOL!

Jaime is too young and immature IMHO.

Inexperience is clearly showing, nothing can be taken for granted even when you actually do have a physical contract signed which he does not have.

The same issue of Autosport also makes a throwaway reference to Senna as an "ex-F1 driver", in a story about the end-of-season DTM test sessions.

Not sure how much to trust Indian media as far as F1 reporting is concerned, but if this is true, I would be little underwhelmed seeing Alg and Kamui sidelined.

If Force India go for Sutil, it will seem like a stale move.

Also, won't he have problems for going to some countries for races? If so I would find it strange on how they would give Sutil the seat.

I would prefer Buemi, Alguersuari or Kobayashi getting the seat.

But Sutil was good in 2010 and 2011.

You know how alot of these driver agreements are set up well is advance how likely is this scenario.

After Sutil's legal problems happen the team goes to him and say we're going to give you a year off to let the heat die down. Then Hulkemberg who was their reserve driver was given the seat as was probably promised to him when he joined FI.

The Hulk's move to Sauber seemed to come out of no where and is very much a sideways move, could he have been told that a Sutil return was on the cards and he jumped before he was pushed?

Mallya said at some point of the 2012 that he would like to retain his current driver pairing and was going to keep them in the team as long as they didn't want to go to another team.

There don't be too many sources for this, but I'd like to see Sutil back in F1. It could be an interesting battle with Di Resta and as far as driver quality is concerned, after 2010 and 2011 it seems that Sutil is/was a top 10 driver.
