How many actual major motor races can the crowd be heard on TV? How many races can the crowd been seen cheering? I thought about this yesterday after the watching the MotoGP (Spanish Grand Prix) yesterday. With more and more races going to countries with very little to no motorsport history, such passion is becoming a rarity.

At Interlagos you could hear the crowd in '08 after Massa won the race and people thought he was WDC. You could also hear the crowd after Massa's '06 win and Massa's '06, '07, and '08 poles, as well as after Rubinho's '09 pole. Those are really so great memories.

Also, you could hear the crowd last year at BCN after Fred's great start.

Yeah, Interlagos would probably be the most passionate F1 crowd I can think of - but obviously the amphitheatre-like nature of the track helps build that feeling.

Italy's also pretty amazing, particularly after the race.

I think the Interlagos crowd is the loudest in F1. When Massa became world champion for 20 seconds in 2008 the commentator's voice was weak behind a big cheer of the crowd!

In 2009 as well you could hear "Rubinho... Rubinho... Rubinho.." over the engine noise at the start of the race.

But the craziest crowd were the British Mansell-Silverstoners that invaded the track! :p

Edit: guys you are quick! :)

There was a lot of noise at Sao Paulo in the Indycar race yesterday, too. Of course it's tough to get an objective measure of this from sitting at home because we only hear what the microphones are trained to pick up, and what the sound editors choose to broadcast.

Monza 1998 when Schumacher came past the line behind the two McLarens, then the next time around in the lead (like a ferret up a drain pipe!), the crowd looked to be going pretty bonkers.

Hockenheim 1995 springs to mind.

Crowd seemed pretty cheery at Australia 2002 from what I can recall.

USA 2005 also, the passion was almost hitting the drivers like a can full of beer in the face.

And I can guess Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Korea, Turkey, etc. have the least passionate crowd.

Check WTCC's visit to Hungaroring last year... it was mad. Many V8 Supercar events have extremely cheerful crowds too

Actually I spoke to the spectators who were in Turkey last year, and he said him, his wife and their dog had a very fun time. :p

As they did at Melbourne 1998, the first race in the 1998 season!

Hamilton got the Spanish crowds also going throughout 2008 and 2009.

The WTCC in Slovakia yesterday was quite loud (crowd wise) which is good to see/hear for a new circuit.

Expect it to be even louder next time in Hungary. They love a bit of Micelitz (spelling?).

Silverstone is usually packed but not necessarily loud (except the airhorns), but Hamilton's pole in 2007 was celebrated quite loudly there. Not sure if it was picked up on TV.

There were a lot of people jumping up and down when AJ Foyt won in 1977.

The loudest I've heard the crowd since then was when Danica Patrick passed Wheldon on lap 190 in 2005.

I can remember last year's Australian Grand Prix and being unable to hear the cars over the noise of the crowd when Mark hauled ass to second in quali by the bee's dick.

In the videos of 2002 you can hear the crowd roaring too over the noise of the engines as Mark crosses the line.

One thing I always notice is that it doesn't seem to matter which track it is in NASCAR, if Dale Earnhardt Jr leads them to the line you will hear the crowd roar. Current bets are that he's saving his best for the 4th July race at Daytona...if he won at Daytona on the fourth of July I think some of hte NASCAR fans would die with joy.

Earnhardt Sr getting booed at Bristol after dumping Terry Labonte is another that springs to mind.

Also Jeff Gordon winning at Dega usually results in a beer can shower

Brands Hatch, 1976: "We want Hunt!"

The Mexican fans who invaded the track before the 1970 race and stood at the edge of the track. The drivers went round and asked them to move back before the race started.

Remind me - what was the problem at Melbourne '98?

Fans were pretty passionate when Alesi won in Montreal.

Mclaren ordering their drivers to switch places after Hakkinen had a pitlane miscue, "restoring" the lead to him. Funny old race, that one.

Ah yes, I must be losing my memory to forget that. I believe DC explained it saying he and Mika had an agreement - first turn leader wins race.

There was considerable passion in Montreal for the first couple of JV races. Of course, other than the first year (2nd place) that was often his worst race of the year!

Fans in Spain have been more exuberant some years than at most GPs but I suspect that's all about Alonso. When he retires those fans will disappear or return to bikes.

Well I was at Silverstone in 1991 and you could certainly hear plenty of cheering then. Sitting in the grandstand at Copse, for the first ten laps or so you could tell where Mansell was on the course from the direction the cheering was coming from

You usually get plenty of cheering (and booing) at BTCC events. Though actually the last occasion I distinctly remember hearing the crowd cheering was when Grosjean made a pass for the lead in the Silverstone GP2 sprint race last year. Probably because I thought it was funny to hear an English crowd cheering a French driver ;)

Mansell on Piquet into Stowe is the loudest reaction I can remember, not sure what it was like on the telly as I've never seen it, but when Matt Neal set himself up for the quarter of a million quid prize for independents at Donington Park in 1999 it was very vocal from our position at the old hairpin where he overtook James Thompson for the lead...

The Mansell race the year before that was nuts too...

Having only attended the Montreal race in person (for the last 12 years) and sitting in the stadium-like hairpin grandstands, the loudest reactions I can remember where when J.V. got up into 3rd after a great start in 2000, after Button came into view first on the last lap last year following Vettel's off, and after Kubica was pulled from his car in 2007 and managed a wave to the crowd from the stretcher following his incredible accident. People literally thought he had been killed, I've never heard such a silent crowd after that car came to rest.

Interlagos, Monza and Silverstone I would say draw the most passionate fans in the world. I haven't been to Brazil but for a party atmosphere with friendly passionate fans, I would say Silverstone beats Monza in my experience. Watching half the tifosi go home when the lead Ferrari is out of the running didn't convince me of this overwhelming passion you read about when I was at Monza.

Silverstone 2010 when Sebastian promptly flew off the road (courtesy of a puncture) in front of the huge grandstands at Maggotts/Becketts and also the Village complex.

It was rather loud.

Definitely that Interlagos race. I love watching Massa's incar cam when he crosses the line, the view and sound of the crowd cheering is just fantastic.

In Nascar, I only usually hear the crowd cheer really good when Earnhardt Jr is leading the race with a few laps to go.

Clipsal 500 at Adelaide gets quite loud when there's a close finish. Whincup in race 1 this year and I remember it as far back as 2000 when Seton/Lowndes were battling for the lead.

Lewis v Massa Silverstone 2011, Silverstone (can't remember which year) when Schumi broke his leg (we cheered in the crowd, accident didn't look that serious, until we saw him being stretchered away :o) Brazil 2008.... just the ones I remember :p
