In 2009 as well you could hear "Rubinho... Rubinho... Rubinho.." over the engine noise at the start of the race.
But the craziest crowd were the British Mansell-Silverstoners that invaded the track!
Edit: guys you are quick!

Hockenheim 1995 springs to mind.
Crowd seemed pretty cheery at Australia 2002 from what I can recall.
USA 2005 also, the passion was almost hitting the drivers like a can full of beer in the face.

And I can guess Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Korea, Turkey, etc. have the least passionate crowd.
Actually I spoke to the spectators who were in Turkey last year, and he said him, his wife and their dog had a very fun time.

Austria 2002. The boos were loud and drowning out everything else.
As they did at Melbourne 1998, the first race in the 1998 season!
Hamilton got the Spanish crowds also going throughout 2008 and 2009.

Expect it to be even louder next time in Hungary. They love a bit of Micelitz (spelling?).

MicheliszThe WTCC in Slovakia yesterday was quite loud (crowd wise) which is good to see/hear for a new circuit.

There's a nice documentary about last year:

The loudest I've heard the crowd since then was when Danica Patrick passed Wheldon on lap 190 in 2005.

In the videos of 2002 you can hear the crowd roaring too over the noise of the engines as Mark crosses the line.
One thing I always notice is that it doesn't seem to matter which track it is in NASCAR, if Dale Earnhardt Jr leads them to the line you will hear the crowd roar. Current bets are that he's saving his best for the 4th July race at Daytona...if he won at Daytona on the fourth of July I think some of hte NASCAR fans would die with joy.

Also the tifosi jumping the fence before the end of the final lap, the year after there was a wall of security guys that formed around the track near the end of the race

The Mexican fans who invaded the track before the 1970 race and stood at the edge of the track. The drivers went round and asked them to move back before the race started.

Remind me - what was the problem at Melbourne '98?
Fans were pretty passionate when Alesi won in Montreal.

Mclaren ordering their drivers to switch places after Hakkinen had a pitlane miscue, "restoring" the lead to him. Funny old race, that one.

Ah yes, I must be losing my memory to forget that. I believe DC explained it saying he and Mika had an agreement - first turn leader wins race.
There was considerable passion in Montreal for the first couple of JV races. Of course, other than the first year (2nd place) that was often his worst race of the year!
Fans in Spain have been more exuberant some years than at most GPs but I suspect that's all about Alonso. When he retires those fans will disappear or return to bikes.

You usually get plenty of cheering (and booing) at BTCC events. Though actually the last occasion I distinctly remember hearing the crowd cheering was when Grosjean made a pass for the lead in the Silverstone GP2 sprint race last year. Probably because I thought it was funny to hear an English crowd cheering a French driver ;)

In Nascar, I only usually hear the crowd cheer really good when Earnhardt Jr is leading the race with a few laps to go.
