I hope this isn't raking over often-discussed history ....

I have just been reading a fascinating technical analysis of the 1953 JAP 4-cylinder F3 engine - water-cooled and of 497cc - in The Motor of 16 December 1953. This incudes a superb cutaway drawing by Cresswell.

Whatever happened to this engine ? Did it ever race ? Are any surviving units still in existence ?

Marwyn ran a 497-c.c. J.A.P engine. But I can't confirm whether it is the exact engine type that you are referring to. It's possibly a start though.

All JAP 500 engines were 497cc, WP

The question is about the four-cylinder version, not the usual singles

Apologies. (I realised just how daft my reply was shortly after posting  )

There's an Autosport article by John Bolster, mainly about the engine, on the 500 Owners Association site:

(click on 'Marques', then 'JAP')

The engine also appears to have been shown on the Arnolt stand at the 1954 New York Show:

I have never come across the JAP 4 cylinder 500cc in the results, this has been discussed 'round the camp fire' so to speak at 500 events, the general opinion is that like the Turner 4 cylinder 500cc, it would have been to heavy for the power it output and as such would not have been able to compete with the Norton double knocker manx.

does anyone know what happen to the JAP?

It just looks so big. How would you sort out the transmission on a bike or F3?
