Not so long ago I saw a photo in an ad in a magazine for a Formula Atlantic (March 76B?) in blue and white colors with Elf and First National City sponsorship, somewhat like the 1978 F1 Tyrrell 008. Looked kinda nice. Anyone know who raced this car back in the day?

No one in those colours. If you know the chassis number I might be able to tell you who and what colour it really ran. FNCB never sponsored an Atlantic car to the best of my knowledge, and I'm not sure Elf did either - though I haven't seen a photo of Depailler's March at Trois Rivieres in 1974, which might have, I guess, as he was their driver. North America wasn't a big market for Elf...

To me it's just a classic example of "tribute colours" gone mad. A bit like all the guys who want to run their F2 March in Hans Stuck Jagermeister colours and not one of them has actually got an ex Stuck car. I think it would be more in keeping with historic racing for the owner to research the livery that their car actually ran and apply that - even if it's boring old white with a few stickers - rather than run a pretend grand prix car.

If I remember correctly, Depailler was sponsored by Ramada Inns throughout those years ( 74 to 77 ) in Trois-Rivières.

I found the ad for the March and it is chassis 76B-8. It was up for grabs for $78.000,-. The company selling it does not have it on their website, nor is it in the listing of vehicles sold, so I surmise that it has been withdrawn by someone.

Is there a historic class for these 70s FA racecars?

Supplied new by March in red gelcoat and probably ran that way for a couple of years being driven by Dale Lang in SCCA and the odd pro race.

Just realised that this a new Atlantic thread, as opposed to the lovely old one we had going, which was really useful in the material contributed. So I should be coming over all misanthropic about TJ starting this one, but can't quite bring myself to do it. :yawnface:

A little off topic but in the same ball park last year I came across 71BM-08 run for Katsu Kobota in Ronnie Peterson F2 Vicks colours ....

If you know the chassis number I might be able to tell you who and what colour it really ran.

Agreed, it seems one struggling Atlantic thread was enough — or at least this thread's title could have answered its intent.

M for monocoque (and hence S for spaceframe)

Dale Lang's 76B is red in my pictures of it.

Sold new in Canada, one of two cars that went to Wilson Southam. According to Ian Coristine, who was supposed to be teaming up with Southam, one of these was sold off quickly to Randy Fraser.
As the car that Southam kept was subsequently burned out in a trailer fire in 1974, I'd say that 71BM-8 [and if there's an 08 on the plate I'd be a little wary of it, the 0 being an American convention] was
Fraser to Gilles Léger to Patricia Smith [all that by mid 1972 after which it disappears from view]

BUT
I'd need to do a load more research to confirm that ownership and discover the provenance of the car after Smith. So if Mr Kubotka wants to get in touch :wave:

Only yellow 76B I can think of was the Tom Pumpelly car with NTS sponsorship.
What I really need to see are colour pics of Tom Outcault's and James King's cars at the IMSA race at Road Atlanta at the start of the year.

Outcault raced a blue 76B most of the season, but there's only one of those in the March build record [76B-6] It's still for sale by Shierson after the Road Atlanta race.
And I have a note - can't remember where from - that Outcault's car at Road Atlanta was green. Which would suggest 76B-5, the only one in plain green gelcoat, on a one off outing, but in which case, what did King drive? [I think 76B-5 was his for rest of the year]

There's no white on this car like the Tyrrells used in '77-78, but is this the car you're thinking of?

A friend of mine just bought this with a friend of his. It originated as a March 752 F2 car, was crashed in testing, then a 753 tub was installed and brought to 75B specs:
