The 1976 edition of Autocourse carries the legend '25th anniversary edition' on the cover, the 1981 edition commemorates the 30th anniversary of the publication yet the 1990 edition is labelled as celebrating 40 years and 2000, 2010 follow the pattern. So far as I am aware the first edition of Autocourse in magazine format was published in 1951. Does anyone know why the publishers suddenly decided to move the anniversary year forward by one?

I don't think they have. 1976 was the 25th anniversary edition whilst at the same time being the 26th edition to be published (the first is published at the start, i.e. the 0th anniversary).
