Meme. A unit of memetic information.
Pronounced like 'gene', which happens to be a unit of genetic information.
As genes persist in living things, memes persist in, and spread to other minds. A song is a meme, a religion a meme, as are captioned pictures.
Meme has also taken on a secondary meaning to mean internet "in jokes", but it's an English word, coined by an English scientist in the 1970's.
It has nothing whatsoever to do with Japan.
Muramasa is mistaken. No idea why it's making him sigh, or hate to see it used, as 'meme' めめ メメ isn't even a word in Japanese. Don't think it's onomatopoeic either.
EDIT: Apparently it was in reference to a removed picture.
And I agree in that it's a bit silly that a thread clearly marked as a meme thread, has so many people taking the time to come in and say how much they hate memes. Quite intolerant.
I personally think most of them are terrible, but then so are most of the captions offered in the caption competition, and if this thread removes all the meme images from the photoshop thread, then everyone should be happy.
If you don't like memes, don't click the meme thread.
Or to put it another way:
If you don't like memes
and open a meme thread
