This is just a suggestion, before the usual suspects start to chop, but how about having a minute or two, perhaps even five 'free for an edit', before the forum software promptly declare that the post has been edited. It would probably, or more likely clean up 98% of every edit and subsequent declaration, which doesn't only take up space but probably strain the server as well.

I edited this post just five seconds after it was posted just to prove my point. Is the below text really necessary if you just corrected a spelling error within a minute after the initial post?

Been wondering about this too. Seems un-necessary as most of the editing is indeed just quick-fixing spelling errors.

Agreed, I hate seeing that message after correcting a spell error...

I'm terrible at typing errors and usually end up editing my posts. I would be all for this.

IIRC this was discussed when the software was changed to IP: there was an option in vBulletin which allowed "silent editing" for up to 15 minutes, but apparently IP doesn't offer it.

Thanks V2 I remember now, as I was sure this was exactly how it used to work.
