They will be testing "DRS à la Lotus", "Coanda exhausts" and who knows what else tomorrow at Magny-Cours with Sam Bird at the steering wheel...
Its about time that the like of Bell, Costa, Willis etc bring to the tarmac some of their brain's contraption too, isn't?

I couldn't read it but its there : http://www.autosport...t.php/id/102447

Magny Cours is a proper race circuit, i don't think they are doing just straight line testing. So how are they allowed to do three days of testing, with the current ban on in-season testing ? I remember they did that once before, but at that time they did give up a day of testing. (Barcelona i think)

It is the young driver tests. They are allowed to test parts as well.

Ah, Ok, they can because they opted out of Silverstone. I wasn't aware about this test.

No, they opted out of the Abu Dhabi test to be held next November.

Brawn says they've had better tire wear than some of their competitors in the last few races?? When exactly was that? Last time I checked they had to 2 stop in Monza and Spa while everyone else did 1 stop without any issues.

Let's hope the exhausts do the job though, would be nice to see Merc slugging it out with RBR and Ferrari.

The pace of the car was not bad today. Better than I expected.

Based on how Monaco went, I think Singapore should suit Mercedes well, maybe not good enough for the top 3 but they should be decent. Though they'll get eaten up alive in Suzuka though.

They will also bring their "big" update, so let's see how things will be in Singapore.

For Suzuka I completely agree. Unless the updates consists of big, I mean really big , aerodynamic upgrades, they will be very slow there, imho.

As much as I hope for the big upgrade I am also prepared to hear the same old story of not understanding how it works right away and blah blah blah...

News about an upgrade package is nice to hear, but question is, what is it they are improving? Monaco indicated that car was capable to compete, Monza, not so much. Singapore I would think therefore might not be as critical as some of the next fast race tracks, Suzuka being one of them. But then, improvements are way of life in F1, thus we should be perhaps happy they have some, and let them surprise us.

I sorta gave up on Merc. Everytime it's just empty promises from Ross. In pre season, they led us all to believe that they easily had the fastest car, the best package. Now, they've fallen off the pace so badly. Both drivers can hardly even challenge for the podium on regular basis. Instead, it's between 5-8th place finishes. China suddenly seem to be a fluke win. Where did i see all this? Oh yes...BMW. ..

I bet that tires took role of a monkey wrench, and not everyone knew what kind of mess they are in because of it. Now they know more.

In fairness, they didn't give any such idea. It was some of the more jumping-the-gun-way-ahead-of-the-curve-knee-jerk-childishly-impatient flavour of Autosport BB fans that propagatd that particular idea. Seriously, I'd be surprised if you can find one quote from a team member in the pre-season trying to give the impression that they thought they were "easily the fastest".

I assume it's DRS stuff... McLaren has a similar but larger and flatter solution.

Anyone with any knowledge can probably be more accurate.

Its a pod to house the sensor end of the aero arrays that measure the airflow behind the car.

Like I said someone with knowledge can be accurate. I gave it a shot!

Edit: And if that's the Scarbs name I think it is, then that's infinity more knowledge.

Mercedes seem to have developed a complacent country club atmosphere. Smaller teams started the season with the Coanda-type exhaust. It's about time they developed this area of the car. They are missing a sense of urgency.

AMuS says that they didn't introduce the exhaust solution earlier because they didn't understand the tires. And with the new exhaust there was the risk of making their tire problems worse.

MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS began the team’s three day Young Driver Test at the Magny Cours circuit today

- Development driver Sam Bird was at the wheel of the F1 W03 car
- The programme focused on acclimatising Sam to the car and evaluating the team’s latest upgrades
- These included a new exhaust package, along with further work on understanding the Pirelli tyres
- A productive day saw Sam complete a total of 95 laps and 419 km over the course of the day

Sam will continue the team’s programme for the second day of the test tomorrow.

Sam Bird

“We’ve had a very productive first day of the test today and were able to complete everything that we had planned on our programme. It felt great to be back in the car again and I enjoyed every minute of it. I’ve driven at Magny Cours previously in a Formula 3 car and it was good to experience it today in a Formula One car.

The layout here is nice and smooth whilst also being quite challenging. We’ve collected a lot of data today which will take some time to sift through this evening and I’m looking forward to another good day tomorrow.”

Not that you can glean too much from test days but it's interesting the W03 had the worst -best lap of the 3. A full second slower than the Ferrari and half a sceond slower than the Force India -despite logging the most laps.

I also think the step is bigger and at F1Technical a user said they have the RBR style air scoop at the kink of the nose.

The image is quite large and it seem this forum has the resize function switched off. So I leave only the link.

P.S. Not RBR style inlet. But the step of the nose really looks bigger.

Looking at the photos and comparing I also think there's no difference in the step. Or if there is compared to the start of the season, it has been made some time ago.

Bianchi is FI's test driver, and part of the Ferrari Young Drivers Academy. Still weird to see a driver driving two different race cars in a test session.

Sam Bird continued the Young Driver Test for MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS today, with Michael Schumacher also paying a visit to the team in Magny Cours to see for himself how the test is progressing and hear Sam’s feedback.

- Sam and the team continued to evaluate the latest developments for the F1 W03 on a second productive day

-The team have used the Pirelli soft tyre so far in the test, and will switch to the hard tyre tomorrow

- Sam completed 125 laps today, taking his total mileage for the test to 970 km

Brendon Hartley, one of the team’s simulator drivers, will take over the car tomorrow for the final day of the test.

Sam Bird

We’ve had a second very positive day at the test and successfully completed our planned schedule, including the evaluation of the performance items that we wanted to achieve. We’re happy with the results that we’ve seen so far and there is a lot of information to go through to hopefully help improve the car. It was a great experience to be back behind the wheel of a Formula One car this week, and to help with the development programme, and I would like to thank the team for giving me this opportunity.

Ok Ivan, that's nice, but your conclusion based on data displayed is...?

They did longer runs mainly , so this mean they tested 4 configurations. Some final configurations I think. They used soft tyres today, I think I read somewhere. Drop off means nothing. Times are inconsistent I think. Fast, slow, fast again.

Interesting in the AMuS article is perhaps this little tidbit:

For the new exhaust to blow exactly there where the engineers want it to, Mercedes were obliged to reduce the diameter of the exhaust pipes. Consequently, the V-8 motor can't "breathe" as well, and this measure will bear some cost in terms of performance/power.

they've got power, they can sacrifice some for better grip

Is there a limit on the mileage?

15000km, but I suspect with so few test days and only being able to use one car they have plenty of mileage in reserve.
